The opening of The Lady Vanishes (1938) is such a flex from Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock built an entire Alpine winter village using miniatures and painted backdrops just to pull off that opening crane shot in 1938.

All the weirdos who would record hours of television on vhs tapes ended up becoming (unwitting) important cultural archivists. Not to mention the YouTubers who upload and preserve them. Child World Commercials

Hollywood Golden Age of Cinema
Russ Tamblyn's “Shovel Dance” in the 1956 film The Fastest Gun Alive A remarkable achievement both in its conception and original execution. Pushing boundaries of movement and technical applications of ability. Tamblyn was the visionary choreographer ― the memorable performer most remembered for appearances in the celebrated musicals Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and West Side Story. What is perhaps largely responsible for a unique physical presence in his work, is he trained in gymnastics and acrobatics without dance practice in specific genres which by necessity establish physical patterns in the body through memory, and repetition. The body naturally acclimatises to “style” rather than physical prowess. We see this often ― when a dancer, recognised for their particular style attempts another unsuccessfully. Usually, only dancers with the broad scope of physical movement from a mechanical, and structural perspective fare better since the science of moving comes to the fore ― not simply knowledge of stylistic genre. His work as an acrobat, tumbler, and gymnast, made him likelier exposed to the science of movement as a biological expression not limited to crafted dance art allowing for much deeper knowledge in the applying of motion and physical expression. His strength, as a marking of capability in this dance, is equally married to his understanding of movement ― and importantly, how to perform it safely ― which is what the students of gymnastics and acrobatics are taught; and in ways more urgently than ballet dancers. Since movements they perform are significantly more dangerous. Both gymnastics and acrobatics ― focus on biomechanics, physics, and science of movement. This background made him unique. He uses the shovels as stilts while balancing. Making percussive tap sounds on two shovels with precision and control as they become an extension of his body and movement. Highlighting his ability to also dance with props. The verticality of his upward leap onto a balcony is impressive, and timed perfectly. Question is, who can do this today?
