This chart shows something really important about the Fed’s so-called Quantitative Tightening, it isn’t happening the way most people think. When the Fed talks about QT, it sounds like they’re shrinking their balance sheet by reducing the number of government bonds they own. In theory, that’s supposed to pull money out of the economy and slow things down but when you look closer, the Fed has only been cutting back on short-term bonds, not the long-term ones. The blue line on the chart shows short-term Treasuries, meaning bonds that mature in less than a year. Those have fallen a lot since 2022, which means the Fed has been letting them roll off without replacing them. That’s the part of QT everyone sees, the part that makes it look like the Fed is tightening aggressively but the red line tells a completely different story. It tracks long-term Treasuries, which are bonds that mature in ten years or more. Those have actually gone up to record levels from just $0.09 trillion back in 2007 to about $1.6 trillion by 2025. so even though the Fed talks about reducing its balance sheet, it’s still holding a huge amount of long-term debt. Long-term Treasuries are what shape borrowing costs for things like mortgages, corporate loans, and government spending. By keeping so many of those on its books, the Fed is helping hold down long-term interest rates. It’s supporting the bond market while tightening only at the short end of the curve. In simple terms, the Fed is draining some money out of the system but doing it in a very controlled way. It’s avoiding a big sell-off in long-term bonds because that could cause interest rates to spike and hurt the economy. So while it looks like the Fed is being tough with QT, the reality is softer the real tightening is happening with short-term bonds, while the long-term side still has a safety net. It’s a reminder that even when the Fed says it’s tightening, it’s still making sure the markets don’t fall apart
