What keeps a pastor preaching faithfully when ministry feels discouraging? In this episode, @HBCharlesJr joins @MattSmethurst and @LigonDuncan to talk about expository preaching, grief, and why the power for ministry is still found in God’s Word.

#OTD May 21, 1959 my mother and father, Ligon and Shirley, were married in Greenville, SC in the old downtown sanctuary of @FBCGreenvilleSC. Mr. & Mrs. J. Ligon Duncan, Jr., would become members of @SPCGreenville, and later, founding members of the PCA.

Seminary is a place of both preparation and discernment. At Reformed Theological Seminary, students like Colson are strengthened as they seek clarity in the Lord’s calling for their lives. It is also a season of growth alongside their families, deepening a shared desire to faithfully proclaim the gospel wherever God leads next. They are being equipped to step forward with conviction and trust in the Lord’s direction.

@BrandenPreedy He was so influenced by the Puritans. I think that’s where he gets this emphasis.

An interesting dissertation idea for those wanting to study Spurgeon at the doctoral level. If Spurgeon believed that covenant lies at the root of all true theology, what place did it occupy in his own?

@edstetzer Thanks for being good-natured about it Ed. My favorite dead Baptist preacher is Spurgeon! I always quote him when I'm teaching Covenant Theology at RTS: "The doctrine of the covenant lies at the root of all true theology."

@mbird12 Thanks for this comment, Mike. I'm not denigrating online or hybrid theological education. RTS was one of the first three ATS schools approved to offer these modalities. We put a lot of effort into delivering the best quality that we can. I'll say more in my larger article.

Hi Ligon, I ponder this too. FTE is not the whole story. There is the number of graduates and it also depends on the length of the programs (1 year, 2 year, 3 year). However, it seems as if you treat online as if it is not real theological education, I would demur. The overwhelming trend is towards online and mixed-mode because the # 1 commodity in further education is flexibility and # 2 is affordability. The challenge is to maintain quality as you cater to that demand.

Tonight, we rejoiced with our @RTSJackson graduates at the annual senior banquet, hosted at @FPCJxnMS. Dr. @DavidTIrving, our President gave a powerful charge. The incomparable Dr. @CharlieWingard gave a personal reflection on & commendation of each student individually.

@johnalex1 @ryanburge Yes, Beeson is “small” (though outside of the top 10% of ATS schools, *most* seminaries are small) but has quality faculty and students.

@LigonDuncan @ryanburge Thank you for this explanation. This is really helpful. As a Beeson graduate, I understand the distinction between size and quality of education

RTS is down 20%. We have churches in our presbytery that have gone for years without a permanent TE. This merits more attention than issues that will dominate our General Assembly this year. #PCA

What seminaries are growing? Which ones are declining? I compared the 2024 data from ATS to the same data from 2007 below. Midwestern Baptist is up 290% United Theological is up 244% Southwestern Baptist is down 46% Fuller Theological is down 63%
