With a couple of modifications, a good #Torch can largely replace multiple daily use items we have or wish for in ambulance (& ?ED). Does anyone know a torch company that does R&D with frontliners but also offers fair royalties or IP acquisition for unpatented concepts?

I had the honour of meeting Professor Chamberlain in 2014. I will never forget him smacking his cane on a desk so we would pay attention 😅 Professor Chamberlain is one of the giants whose shoulders the entire paramedic profession stands upon. This is a sad day for paramedicine.

So will this be a risk factor in the HEART score, or will COVID get its own category? Will the new acronym have to be RACHET?

I’m in Darwin for a conference, there is a “black tie” function on Friday night. What is Black-tie Darwin style?

@DrLindaDykes I'd love to see data on volume (which often but not always correlates with how full they are) and number of code greys/staff abuse etc. EDs are sensory nightmares and it gets worse when they're crowded!

ED crowding: anyone know of any papers/data on the reduction in productivity (and hence increased patient processing time) that comes from EDs being physically full? We all know a vicious cycle starts when you can’t find anywhere to see patients, but has it been quantified?

@DocOnSkis Support group/special interest group. Call it what you want, but that's the group who is going to be meeting up with people to eat chocolate biscuits!

TimTams are the biscuit equivalent of Fosters beer. Foreigners think they're quintessentially Australian, but no-one here really likes/drinks/eats them. #fightme

@mhnparamedic This is a pet peeve of mine. I'm not going to leave my patient soiled - that's just asking for skin breakdown issues, not to mention the lack of dignity! And ED nurses are run off their feet! Sometimes other things take priority, but toileting/PC is a basic element of care!

Is “paramedics don’t assist with personal care / toileting” a local cultural issue or a more general thing?

@hsweig @jtrebach BMs have the strongest/most concentrated odour of it, but that odour (sans the BM smell) also comes out of people's skin.

don’t underestimate the power of smell when seeing a patient i can smell a GI bleed before i even walk in the room, and one of our nurses can smell ketones on a patient’s breath with strangely good accuracy

@SallyRCbra @jtrebach Yes, I smell it out and about all the time. Most people stop smelling of it within a couple of weeks of infection. Some people continue to smell of it for months. Whenever I work with someone else who can smell it, our noses always agree.

@SallyRCbra @jtrebach It's hard to explain. Imagine if a teenager with advanced renal failure locked themselves in a small room while they had a nasty cold, and their diet included a lot of onions. It hits higher in the nose than Parkinson's.

@NobodyImpawtant The NT has dedicated TB and leprosy clinics in every major region because it's an issue up there. If you want to learn about some of Australia's interesting TB history, check out the Cattle and Buffalo Policy that was implemented to help manage it.
