I genuinely hope that every journalist I know reads this — I hope anyone who judges an award does too. So often in media we (me included) think of “good” journalism as exposing wrongdoing. The truth is there are so many other stories to tell that matter just as much if not more

I will not speak to foreign media about the killing of Palestinian journalists. I will not sit on your global channels to be part of a segment you’ll forget by tomorrow. To you, we are just a headline — a tragedy to consume, not colleagues to defend. We are being hunted and killed in Gaza while you watch in silence. For two years, your fellow journalists here have been slaughtered. What did you do? Nothing. Or maybe it’s because we are Palestinian journalists — we don’t count as “real” colleagues in your eyes.

This was my favourite story of 2024 — one I pursued for 2 years. I traveled 1,468 kms to write it and see the power of a community getting power, literally & figuratively. It's rare good news at a time when everything seems bad. Solutions can take a long time but they're worth it

Across northern Ontario, 24 First Nations that previously relied on diesel generators for power are now connected to the provincial electrical grid. In the communities, the culmination of this decades-long project is cause for celebration: thenarwhal.ca/ontario-indige…

“I think all of us have that inner compass. Do you listen to it, or do you not?” Author @TanyaTalaga reflects on intuition, storytelling, and the pursuit of uncovering her family history, in this candid Q&A with @SadiyaAnsari about her book The Knowing. thewalrus.ca/i-needed-to-be…

“In New York, a mother with no history of drug use lost custody of her toddler & newborn for 5 months after she tested positive for fentanyl that the hospital had given her in her epidural.” This state-sanctioned violence inflicts a very specific form of trauma that people don’t often recover from. themarshallproject.org/2024/12/11/pre…

Up to here with "women care about abortion, men care about 'the economy.'" Reproductive justice, balancing family and work, choice in life stage is "the economy," esp in a country w near-zero mat leave. Most women who have abortions are mothers. They know "the economy" deeply.

My fearless, eloquent friend @Pacinthe keeps saying the quiet part out loud for all of us: it's far beyond time Canadian media talks about Palestine. Not doing so is contradictory to everything we do to amplify truth, accuracy and all the powerful tenants of journalism.

"I’m painfully aware that every time I talk about our shortcomings when covering Palestine...I lose 'credibility.' I silently agreed not to talk about Palestine in exchange for a 'viable' career in journalism. No longer." My @TorontoStar op-ed today: thestar.com/news/insight/t…

Something that Tanya Talaga said a couple of weeks ago that hasn’t left me: when you think of Murray, think of the weight of hearing thousands of accounts of untold horror, and the toll it would take on your body. Think of taking that on. cbc.ca/news/politics/…

In the 1990s, a group of First Nations chiefs in northern Ontario began dreaming of a transmission line to finally connect their diesel-dependent communities to the electricity grid. @fatimabsyed tells you how they made it happen.
The Narwhal@thenarwhalca

This 1,800-km transmission line connects 24 remote First Nations communities to Ontario's power grid. It’s displacing diesel fuel, allowing for more homes to be built — and the nations are the majority owners of the project. via @fatimabsyed thenarwhal.ca/ontario-indige…
