Just finished up a site visit in Djibouti, but excited to announce the @liquidstar_io Education Portal is up and running in our Waypoint in Jamaica. This portal allows students to access @OpenAI powered #ChatGPT Tutor, an Open Source LLM Tutor, @khanacademy SAT Prep Videos, and other educational videos. All of this (except for #ChatGPT) is running locally in the data center meaning students (and the Waypoint) won't be using additional bandwidth to access these videos. This means that future Waypoints will be able to provide electricity, water, internet and education services anywhere in the world. This is an important milestone for us as it proves you can run and operate micro datacenters in remote areas using @SpaceX @Starlink and solar. Up next we will be working on sharing micro datacenter resources between the charging stations and testing using the heat from these datacenters to clean water.

Africa: At Risk of Falling Behind in the Global AI Race The scarcity of reliable electricity, coupled with the devastating impacts of climate change, has hampered Africa's ability to gain momentum in the worldwide race towards AI dominance. Many overlook the reality that sweltering temperatures, inconsistent and costly electricity, and insufficient access to water create formidable barriers to operating data centers. Despite Africa boasting 17% of the world's population, 13% of its mobile connections, and 5% of its broadband connections, it claims a mere 1% of the world's data center space, as reported in the Cisco Annual Internet Report (2018–2023). To provide a digestible context, consider this: for every 125,000 Americans, there exists one data center, while for every 15,000,000 Africans, there's just one. This is a race Africa cannot afford to forego. Recent years have seen a surge in investments in software and application ventures. However, investors are often reluctant to back startups pioneering in hardware-intensive sectors like infrastructure (electricity, internet, and water) — the three vital elements for constructing data centers. This leads us to a philosophical quandary: how valuable are software and mobile applications if consistent electricity access is not guaranteed? We at Liquidstar recently conducted an interview highlighting the extent of the issue where a computer science student couldn’t do his homework because of lack of electricity (added to chat GPT output for context). The paucity of consistent and affordable electricity is costing Africa dearly as companies shift manufacturing bases away from China. This is starkly evident in countries like Morocco and Egypt, which boast nearly 99% electricity coverage and lead the continent in manufacturing automotive, phosphate and chemicals, construction materials, and even aerospace components. Meanwhile, other countries remain confined to lower-value services. As the global competition in AI intensifies, numerous African nations risk being marginalized, left at the mercy of eastern and western powers deploying AI tools capable of undermining the continent's budding software startups. This begs another philosophical question: what implications does it have when Africa's data is used to train AI Large Language Models for other generative AI applications, only to be deployed by anonymous individuals on distant continents? At Liquidstar, we remain optimistic. We see a unique opportunity for Africa to radically reshape the economics of data center operations by using them to address energy deficits and improve water purification. In the vein of traditional electricity grids, we believe the solution lies in modular micro-datacenters, a concept already being tested in our microgrid Waypoints. These Waypoints generate electricity and internet, and purify water — elements essential for data centers and acutely lacking across many regions of Africa. The AI revolution is primed to trigger one of the largest wealth transfers and job redistributions in global history. We're already witnessing this with multiple billion-dollar valuations and a billion-dollar acquisition. Social Impact and Investing in Africa cannot merely be catch-up games, replicating solutions from elsewhere. We need proactive leaders in both the government and private sectors to invest in innovative startups like ours, so that the next generation of Africans can lead in developing AI solutions tailored to Africa's unique needs.
