It was also major gift to its Cold War enemies. Some form of this was likely necessary given then scale of Stalin’s repression, but a more balanced, gradual process would have been more sensible Regardless, from mass housing to the space program, lots of great things happened under Khrushchev and I think he deserves more credit, despite his flaws. Stalinists hate him for his anti-Stalinism and anti-Stalinists see him as (structurally) continuing Stalinism, so few on the left actually want to claim him.

As for Stalin, despite the immense bloodshed he presided over, his role in securing victory in World War II alone ensures his place in history, not only as one of the greatest socialist leaders, but arguably as one of the greatest world leaders more broadly speaking.
