Hello...no. That is a Yoruba textile called Jawu (Jáwùú, O'jawu, o n'jawu, Jawu Aso-Oke), a remarkable multicolour handwoven cloth distinguished by its intricate openwork patterns. Unlike ordinary woven fabrics, Jawu features deliberate eyelets and decorative holes created directly during the weaving process, producing designs that can appear almost embroidered, laser-cut, or lace-like from a distance. Jawu belongs to the ancient Yoruba aṣọ òfì weaving tradition, the same family of handwoven textiles that gave rise to many forms of Aso Oke. The openings seen in Jawu are not accidental. Skilled weavers intentionally create them by manipulating and grouping warp threads in specific ways while working on the loom. The result is a fabric that combines structure, texture, and artistry in a single weave. Another closely related Yoruba fabric known as Ẹlẹ́yà also incorporates openwork holes, but Jawu differs technically because the threads used to form these openings continue across the cloth's surface, creating additional decorative patterns and visual complexity. Historically, producing Jawu demonstrated a weaver's mastery. The patterns required greater technical skill and more intricate loom work than ordinary striped fabrics, making the cloth a symbol of craftsmanship and prestige. Today, Jawu remains popular in ceremonial Yoruba fashion, appearing in luxury Aso Oke, gele combinations, and elegant women's outfits, where its distinctive texture adds depth and refinement. Beyond its beauty, Jawu was admired for the way light interacted with the fabric. As the cloth moved during celebrations, dances, and ceremonies, the open spaces created shifting contrasts of light and shadow that made the woven patterns appear even more striking. Alongside celebrated Yoruba textiles such as general Aso Oke, Seghosen, Aso Olona, Adire, etc... Jawu stands as a testament to the ingenuity, artistry, and enduring sophistication of Yoruba weaving traditions developed across Yorubaland for generations.

Here is something you should know about Adire 🔥 : Adire is the iconic dyed textile, originated from the Yoruba people. Traditionally made by Yoruba women, it’s a symbol of rich creativity, cultural heritage, and expression. There are 4 main techniques: Oniko - Tie-dye using raffia + seeds, pebbles, or corn kernels for dotted/circular patterns Alabere - Stitched resist with raffia (or thread) for intricate lines Eleko - Freehand painting with cassava starch resist using chicken feathers, palm midrib, or sticks Alabela - Wax resist (batik) for designs These designs can look different depending on the method. More will be covered on this topic ❤️ What’s your favourite Adire design style? Drop it below! 👇 #Adire #Yoruba #africa #nigeria #beninrepublic #togo

Presidency Nigeria@NGRPresident·
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT We are aware of yet another deliberate attempt to weaponise religion for politics across various online platforms. Yesterday, it was a manipulated video overlaid with fake audio and false attributions intended to portray President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a negative light through the use of an influencer’s identity. Today, it is another deepfake video falsely framed around a religious leader in a calculated attempt to provoke Muslims against the President. The pattern is becoming increasingly obvious. As the political season approaches, desperate actors will continue to manufacture outrage, distort faith, manipulate context, spread falsehoods, and push dangerous emotional bait across social media platforms and WhatsApp groups in an attempt to divide Nigerians for political gain. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never hidden who he is. He is a Muslim. He is married to a Christian. He leads a multi religious nation built on constitutional freedom of worship, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. His position has always been clear: Nigeria belongs to Christians, Muslims, and citizens of every faith and background who believe in peace, progress, and national unity. In his 2026 Lent and Ramadan message, President Tinubu reminded Nigerians that both Christianity and Islam share common values rooted in compassion, sacrifice, justice, peace, and love for humanity. Before sharing such inflammatory content, Nigerians must pause and ask one simple question: who benefits from setting citizens of different faiths against one another? This is not faith or patriotism. Neither is it politics. This is coordinated manipulation at scale. We urge citizens to reject divisive propaganda, verify information before sharing, and remain vigilant against attempts to destabilise national cohesion through digitally amplified disinformation. In line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including provisions relating to cybercrime, incitement, public mischief, and the malicious spread of false information capable of threatening public peace and national security, relevant cases and digital actors involved in such activities will be identified and reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
