#NM #PT582 Good question! Since the evidence is indeed mixed, I would probably use other treatment techniques for now unless it was specifically requested by a patient and effective for them, or supported by strong evidence in the future. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

#PT582 #RP This article shows the most significant risk factors for OA include "old age, female gender, overweight & obesity, knee injury, repetitive use of joints, low bone density, muscle weakness, and joint laxity". ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

#PT582 #DS Though only slight improvements were found in this study, I still think "pre-hab" exercises could be very beneficial for patients before surgery. I think it would be patient dependent though & not necessarily mandatory. bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjope…

#PT582 #KS @NAUPT582 Yes! Nutrition is part of the scope of our practice and can affect our pt's progress, recovery, and function. PTs can also be the gateway to other medical professionals should pt need additional nutritional education. apta.org/PatientCare/Nu…

#NAUPT582 #KC Great q, Kale! Here's an interesting article showing a successful lumbar strengthening exercise program for pts with a lower limb amputation and LBP. Results showed decreased pain, increased abdominal & back extensor strength, improved lumbar ROM & endurance!

@t_n_o_6 @NAUPT582 As a matter of fact, I went to a session at CSM about peds aquatic & they talked about the group sessions they provide! It required more PT supervision & a smaller group of kids, but overall was very effective & enjoyable to the participants! I’d love to chat more about this :)

@llg336 @NAUPT582 Yay kids!! Thanks for the reply Laura! Do you think children would require more one on one attention in the pool or do you think group therapy would work just as well? #PT582

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… #BW #PT582 Aquatic plyo exercise can be great for patients that can not tolerate high loads on land, yet still work on resistance training against water to build key outcomes of plyometric exercise such as power& endurance

As always, it depends on the patient, but I think that plyo training can be great for older adults. Due to the loading that this form of exercise requires, this could be great to maintain bone density, & work on improving reactive balance and endurance @NAUPT582 #PT582 #SW

@NAUPT582 #PT582 #LG Once patients know the diagonal concepts of D1 and D2 we can teach them ways to perform these PNF patterns at home with therabands. This may not be as effective without our contact/cuing, but it is a way to refamiliarize pts with functional patterns.

@susansSPT Very true and great point, Susan! It is exciting to hear that you already have an idea of how this could apply to your future patients. How would you go about the patient education required in teaching this form of independent PNF to your patient? #PT582

#LG #PT582 For HEPs, we can have the pts use their opposite hand in order to provide that manual contact if the purpose is to stimulate the targeted muscle. To provide resistance, I would give my patients a resistance band. Maybe not as effective, but still provides contact!

@PJThompson93 Thanks @PJThompson93 ! I appreciate your thoughts. I agree that education plays an important role here. Would you try to educate family members how to provide manual contact PNF at home or educate on different tools they can use that would substitute for manual contact? #PT582

#PT582 #LG My first thought is to educate the patient and their family on PNF and manual contact. I believe it was Dr. Carter I heard say any PNF is better than no PNF. So I believe even a PNF HEP without manual contact would still benefit a patient. bit.ly/2sVmlEq

@AlfredoSayeg Thanks for sharing this study and your thoughts, @AlfredoSayeg ! PNF can be effective in clinic, but it is great to see evidence supporting that it can also be effective outside our clinic. We can get creative at adapting these exercises to each individual patient! #PT582

#PT582 #LG A study by Maddigan et al. found that PNF with contact (assisted) vs non-contact (strap) vs stretching yielded the same improvements in ROM. It also reduced movement time and is recommended after exercise so as to not impact performance.

@addybAZ Hey @addybAZ I love this idea and your example of clinical experience with making PNF patterns more functional! I can also see how this could be progressed as the patient gains strength! Thanks for your insight and for being committed and excited about functional movement!

#PT582 #LG for example in neuro clinic this week, rather than pt. performing D1 flexion in standing with the theraband we actually threw a ball for him to kick as he was performing the motion. This could transfer to using diff med. balls for UE patterns etc. Great pregunta!

@yazzyfreshh @NAUPT582 Great article, @yazzyfreshh ! Thank you for sharing! I'm encouraged to see that aquatic therapy can lead to these effects! If we continue to apply this in the pool, what are some ways that we can carry over these effects at home as well? #PT582
