@elicalebon Equating Khomeini’s theocracy with democratic socialism is false. Social welfare in democracies expands freedom, not control—unlike totalitarianism, it’s debated, accountable, and proven to work in nations that blend capitalism with equality.

Do you know why Khomeini promising free everything—free electricity, free water, free transportation, free housing—was so successful in mobilization the Iranian revolution, just like Mamdani’s “free everything” is mobilizing an American revolution now? Because those promises aren’t about delivery, but the psychology of control. In totalitarian movements, the promise of all things good creates something called an “infallible environment.” The infallible environment or movement is something upon which total moral purity is projected. Nothing is more morally pure than feeding the hungry and housing the unhoused. Once the infallible environment has been constructed, anybody who opposes it is considered morally corrupt. Then, the movement doesn’t have to destroy them. Society erases them as illegitimate. The movement automatically erases every roadblock by its appearance of virtue. “But how do you know that this movement isn’t actually for the betterment of mankind?” Because it’s advancing democratic socialism, which is purely theoretical and has never been achieved because it’s an oxymoron. In reality, the dictionary definition of democratic socialism is the total elimination of capitalism, which means the collapse of liberal democracies, which are the only system under which humans can thrive. In its place, only mass murder and history’s greatest famines have ensued. In the real world, liberal democracies protect the individual’s interest, and individualism is the only buffer against tyranny. The Founding Fathers understood this well, and that is why people vote with their feet to be here more than anywhere else in the world. Not places where the socialist experiment burnt everything to the ground. So do you see the illusion now? The movement that has historically only brought harm is perceived as good, while those fighting to preserve the only thing shown to produce good are reimagined as evil. That’s the psychology of control.

Man, let me just tell you, early 19th century men's overcoats are basically their own character in this film. Particularly Willem Dafoe's. 6/25
