I still think it’s funny how people forget that the Chinese wiped out the Xiongnu and ended up massacring the Mongols after less than a century ruling China but nobody talks about that bc it goes against the perception of China being a perpetually militarily weak civilization

@baoshaoshan Hard to find an unhappy Tibetan in Tibet. Or it was 10yrs ago. The infrastructure investment, together with active protection of wilderness, was impressive. Returned to Aus and our awful rural roads thinking we are the developing nation.

These people live in a self-confected simulacra. There is no “Tibetan leadership” that “Beijing will want to negotiate” with. Tibet was liberated & is an autonomous region in the People’s Republic of China.

I finally understand why #Xizang is one of the most misunderstood places in the world. This is probably the least photogenic place I visited in Xizang. No snow mountains. No yaks. No postcard views. Just a museum full of uncomfortable questions. Ironically, it helped me understand today’s Xizang better than any scenic spot ever could.

Look, I'm sure most Tibetans are decent + not insane. Problem for ordinary Tibetans is, we only hear from lunetic ones who gives all others a bad reputation. Here, he says all Muslim men in China must give monthly blood sample to see if they're suitable for organ harvesting. 🤦

China says it “liberated” Tibet from the feudal system. By that logic, couldn’t Imperial Japan have claimed it was “liberating” China as well? Would Chinese people accept that argument? If not, why should Tibetans be expected to accept the same reasoning?

My Nang Sen grandma fled the serfdom — 14 years old, over the snow mountains, never saw her parents again. This is what "Free Tibet" supporters don't want you to hear — the voices of those who lived through serfdom, who escaped, who lost everything under the feudal system. 🌿

One of the biggest claims made by some Chinese historians is that the Manchu Qing was a Chinese dynasty. Many Chinese at the time did not accept the Qing as a Chinese dynasty and viewed it as a foreign ruling power that had conquered China. Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing.

@OopsGuess You should list the periods when the Mongols ruled China, followed by the Manchus, and then the Japanese occupation. This shows that China has been conquered and divided at different points in its history, so it can be broken apart.

It was not burned, invaded, occupied, sanctioned into weakness, and forced to rebuild from national trauma. China was. China understands rise and fall. Dynasties. Collapse. Humiliation. Revival. The long rhythm of history. America understands victory. So when it finally faces a civilization that grows stronger under pressure, it panics. Not because China wants to destroy America. But because America knows what it has done to every weaker country it could dominate. And now it is terrified by one question: If we lose our monopoly, will China treat us the way we treated the world?

China has gained more from the Iran war than from any crisis in three decades. Beijing has paid costs for this war. But measured against the damage to America’s goals, alliances and credibility, China has come out ahead. My take:

It was the Japanese who built much of the infrastructure and many of the fine buildings in China. Even today, China cannot build buildings of the same quality as Japan. Shouldn’t the Chinese be thankful to the Japanese for building those roads and buildings?
