Research is obviously important but something I grapple with when reporting on mental health is the investment in research over connecting people to interventions. Yes, research. But data seems to say our best hope for treating mental illnesses is addressing social determinants.

Research is our best hope for understanding and treating mental illnesses. The Biden-Harris Administration released the first-of-its-kind White House Report on Mental Health Research Priorities, which outlines several @NIMHgov research initiatives. whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-upda… (1/3)

Like humans, flies require sleep to consolidate memory. HOWEVER, depending on the reason for sleep deprivation (i.e. starvation) the brain adapts to consolidate memories even during deprived states. #WomenInSTEM #SfN22

The great thing about being a scientist is that you can follow the questions that interest you. Sometimes you find yourself on unexpected adventures like @effatma modeling drug use in lobsters and crayfish #SfN2022

Following @NIH’s 2014 mandate to include both sexes in research studies #neuro has increased the ratio of studies looking at BOTH sexes (yay!) HOWEVER, as of 2020 only 5% of neuro rodent studies included sex as a statistical variable 🤔 #SfN2022 @AnnalieseBeery

Attending #SfN2022 can boost enthusiasm, provide career opportunities, and expand social circles BUT it also requires thousands of people to travel. How can we reduce our carbon emissions moving forward? @LUBeckerLab qr.link/J41qLE

Dr. Poe also discussed dramatic sex differences in sleeping rats. Males/females/sleep similarly EXCEPT during the luteal phase when females exhibit more wakefulness and less REM/N2 @ckaraskiewicz
