I’m Venezuelan, and you are correct. Most of these MAGAzuelans see themselves as white. To them, the Venezuelans Trump refers to in his speeches are lower-class and of a different race—they don’t see themselves as part of that group. But let’s be clear: there is no pure race in Venezuela; we are all mixed. Still, they see Trump as their liberator, just as they once saw Bolívar and, at some point, even Chávez. They love caudillos, and Trump is their caudillo catire. What Trump is doing now with his populism is exactly what Chávez did, yet they fail to see it. It has never been about socialism or democracy—it’s always been about power.
