To virtue signal, SO MANY corporate companies do this for both their public AND private livestreams, all-hands meetings, and announcements. It’s literally just a few who started it... and the. all the other companies were concerned they’d look unwoke and compassionless by comparison. In the tv production world, it complicates all the graphics and camera shots dramatically. Hilariously, they also pay for live captioning on these videos - perplexing the producers.

@elonmusk Throwback to when Disney’s Karey Burke said, "as the mother of one transgender child and one pansexual child," she wants "many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories" and wants 50% of characters to be LGBTQIA and minorities

@TruthPoPo @elonmusk @stclairashley It’s not about woke, it’s about making sure your Deaf neighbour or your hard of hearing grampa can enjoy the video too. There’s lots of deaf neighbors and hard of hearing grampas out there!

@elonmusk @stclairashley The video has 2 different languages: 1)ASL & 2)English & 3 different modalities: 1) visual (ASL), 2)spoken (English), 3)written (English). Not all deaf people access spoken or written English (use ASL), hard of hearing people don’t hear spoken English well (read English captions

@stclairashley What’s the point of sign language in a video if you have subtitles? Am I missing something?

@PatriotAegon @thesignlife @elonmusk @stclairashley 10 percent of the population is deaf or hard of hearing. Some use only American Sign Language and many are a little, somewhat, or very bilingual with English. English is not related to ASL: 2 different languages and modalities; ie., a show in Spanish & having English captions.

@thesignlife @elonmusk @stclairashley Nope, don’t know anyone in the deaf community. What percentage of the population is this? Other replies have been helpful in my understanding.

Receding from commitments like the tide going out. Need to figure out how to keep moving forward and working in a body that crumbles in different ways weekly.

Dr. Jenelle Rouse states the sad fact that Black Deaf children learn very little about themselves during their education. They often learn pejorative views of Black people. Being seen & seeing themselves must occur across the curriculum all year long, not just Black History month

gallaudet.edu/center-black-d… Dr. Tom Humphries notes the problem of authenticity in the world of academy, studies by us, not about us & importance of being authentic despite resistance. “In emerging area of Black Deaf Studies…create, borrow, judge, retain, and revise new narratives.
