One of my partners led rounds for three companies doing totally different things that are now competing with each other. With Harvey stresses about Claude for Legal and Rogo threatened by the 15 OpenAI FDEs sitting at Goldman Sachs, it's clear traditional vertical/functional siloes collapsing and startups are converging in ways they always claimed they would but never did

Been hearing this for a while from people researching the Chinese Straussians. But the main point is you should go listen to @JohnathanBi if you want to keep the flame of the Western tradition lest the pesky Asiatics steal that alpha claremontreviewofbooks.com/leo-strauss-in…
Johnathan Bi@JohnathanBi

It would not surprise me if China became the torch-bearer of the western classics. Ie. You send your grandkids to PKU to study Greek and Tsinghua to read the Federalist Papers. China has a respect for classical texts unrivaled in the west (except, perhaps, by the Jews) while the modern west is committing cultural suicide denouncing their own traditions. Few people know this, but my Western Canon podcast is already watched more in China than rest of the world combined. Despite it 1. being in Academic English (which I don’t dub) 2. launching much later. Seeing the different reactions to these texts is wild: in the West, these books are seen by the mainstream as “problematic” and dangerous, at best useless entertainment. The UK government literally flagged Shakespeare, Milton, Hobbes, Dante as potential signs of far-right extremism. In China, I was expecting significant pushback against “westernization” but instead found a reverence for Western texts that the west itself had lost. The top Chinese scholars know the western tradition like the back of their hand, and public intellectuals are celebrities. I don’t think the west is lost fwiw, but not on a good trajectory. Hopefully more projects like mine can rekindle that ancient flame.

Last week, the AI discourse split in two. One version dominated the headlines. The other was harder to see, but no less important.

As "American Dream" social contract decays people engaging in more "financial nihilism": degen shitcoins, prediction markets, perps, record retail flows into equities. The old W-2 corporate ladder is never gonna afford a house, might as well gamble. Better 0.001% chance than 0%.

Increasing uncertainty and FUD about world order has people agitated. Mental health issues on rise and life expectancy dropping even pre-covid. Widespread pessimism that can't be explained by macro and it's even seeping into the music.

Religion is resurging in US as people worry about war, economy and AI. Atheism peaked in 90s-00s with Fukuyama "end of history" hubris that we solved politics and it will be Western Liberal Democracy kumbaya. Then 9/11, GFC, domestic frissure, and now AI fear for jobs/safety

Seedance kind of represents to me the first time that a Chinese AI product is just better definitively than a western product. With DeepSeek is was mostly “this is close on performance BUT it is open source”. Perhaps Manus briefly was the best agentic product but that was debatable. I don’t think there is a western peer of Seedance from what I’ve seen. It is more impressive than any other video generation model, from what I can tell.

This aired tonight to 1 billion people in China. A year ago these robots could barely wave a handkerchief, now they can do backflips and kung fu with nunchucks. Physical intelligence is the next frontier.

Trump will say he averted loss of US lives on a tiny far-flung island while onshoring critical chip supply chain and 6th largest company in world. Xi will fulfill Chinese dream that has eluded every leader since Mao. Before 2028. Not possible under Vance/Rubio/Newsom.

People finally coming around to the fact that Trump will (or has already) traded Taiwan away for moving TSMC onshore + a few Ts in Chinese dollar reserves. No war in Taiwan. Only possible under Trump. Both prez see an asymmetric win-win that goes down in history
mark pincus@markpinc

My prediction is that we will avoid ww3 (or put it off) by trading Taiwan to China in return for a 20 yr guarantee on semiconductor access. This is a brilliant analysis and must read.

Tt's the elite version of "financial nihilism" that's taking over society. As people realize the old path (stable W-2 job and corporate ladder) will never get them to their goals (AGI risk, layoffs, incumbent ossification), they're more willing to gamble, which is why we're seeing exponential growth in degen crypto, prediction markets, retail flows in equities etc. If the American Dream is broken, might as well buy a lottery

so many harvard/stanford new grads quitting their traditional prestigious corporate jobs (finance, consulting, etc) just 3-6 months in to join the startup world. feel like this transition usually happens a couple years out... bubble behavior? specific to gen z/AI?
