Lou, you're half right – I misspoke earlier and apologies for it. The Remain campaign didn't say you can't leave the EU without leaving the ECHR. They did something more insidious: they deliberately conflated the two to scare voters into thinking Brexit would endanger their human rights. The truth is the ECHR and EU are completely separate. Theresa May herself argued for staying in the EU but leaving the ECHR. The conflation was a scare tactic, not a legal reality. That's why leaving the ECHR is now the unfinished business of Brexit.

@bettyfreedom007 @ReaperSteven @terrychristian "the Remain campaign told us it was impossible to leave the EU without leaving the ECHR" You're tripping yourself up here with your nonsense. If this was the case then it proves there wasn't any appetite to leave the ECHR. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Steven, let's clear this up. 1. "We didn't vote to leave the ECHR" You're right—it wasn't on the ballot. But that's because the Remain campaign told us it was impossible to leave the EU without leaving the ECHR. They lied. We now know the two are completely separate—the ECHR is part of the Council of Europe, not the EU. So the fact we can leave it, and that it's a foreign court blocking our sovereignty, is precisely why leaving the ECHR is now the unfinished business of Brexit. 2. "It's not a foreign court" Technically, you're correct. The European Court of Human Rights is an international court, not a foreign one. But here's the practical reality: it's a court based in Strasbourg, composed mainly of non-British judges, that routinely overrides UK law and blocks the will of our Parliament. When a single, unelected judge in Strasbourg can ground a deportation flight approved by our sovereign Parliament, that's a foreign court in all but name. The UK has been found in violation 329 times out of 567 cases, and each time, we're treaty-bound to change our laws. That's not sovereignty. That's submission. The bottom line: You're right on the technicalities. But you're wrong on the substance. The ECHR may not be a "foreign court" in the strictest legal sense, but it operates as one. And the fact we didn't vote on it in 2016 doesn't mean we can't leave it now—especially when leaving it is the only way to truly take back control of our borders and laws. That's why Reform UK and Restore Britain has pledged to withdraw, why even Labour figures like Jack Straw are calling for reform, and why leaving the ECHR has become the defining sovereignty issue of our time.

@bettyfreedom007 @terrychristian Those 17.4 million still can't agree on what they actually voted for, if they ever knew at all. So claiming to speak for all of them is laughable. & mentioning a bit part player to claim ECHR withdrawal was on the table when the main protagonists said the opposite is desperate.

Lou, you're correct the ECHR isn't part of the EU. But the claim that Brexit leaders never linked it to sovereignty is flat wrong. In 2016, Daniel Hannan – a Vote Leave leader – said: "There's no point in leaving the EU if we then replicate undemocratic, corporatist structures at home" and called the ECHR "undemocratic, corporatist structures". He saw Brexit as a chance to restore full parliamentary sovereignty, including cutting ties to the ECHR. As for "giving up human rights" – no one is proposing that. Leaving the ECHR would simply mean replacing it with a British Bill of Rights, accountable to our own Parliament, not foreign judges. We'd still have rights; they'd just be decided by the people we elect, not Strasbourg. Now, can you explain how staying under a foreign court you claim is "nothing to do with Brexit" squares with taking back control of our borders and laws – the very reason 17.4 million people voted Leave in the first place?

@bettyfreedom007 @terrychristian ECHR was nothing to do with brexit and the ringleaders pushing to leave the EU were quite clear about it at the time. Why don't you just give up your own human rights if you're so keen on not having them.

@terrychristian The chocolate egg has only been a thing in this country for about 150 years and there's examples going back decades where they were sold without the word Easter. These pricks churn out the same faux outrage every year.
