A first-time mom was told during pregnancy that her baby was big. Some people around her started telling her, “If you push a baby that big, it will tear your vagina. Better make the baby smaller before delivery.” Do you know what she did? She started drinking plain Lipton tea every day because she was told it would make the baby shrink. By the time she was due, the baby’s weight had dropped drastically. Later, doctors noticed something wasn’t right and booked her for a CS. When the baby came out, the baby was very tiny and had to be placed on oxygen immediately. The mother started crying and eventually confessed that she had been following advice from people who were not medical professionals. Thank God the baby survived. Pregnancy is not the time for experiments.

She just had her second baby. Her mother was supposed to come for omugwo but she went for her sister who recently put to birth for her first child, so she wanted her elder sister to come instead. Her husband insisted his mother will come. The mother-in-law arrived a few days before delivery, and since the baby was born, this woman has been waking up around 5:30 every morning to boil hot water for her mother-in-law’s bath. After that, she goes back to rest briefly, then wakes up again to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She’s the one recovering from childbirth. She’s the one breastfeeding. She’s the one waking up at night with a newborn. Yet she’s still the one cooking. According to her, the mother-in-law doesn’t cook, doesn’t wash baby clothes, doesn’t bathe the baby, and doesn’t do house chores. She mainly carries the baby for a while and returns the baby when it’s time to breastfeed. After just one week, the new mother told her husband she was exhausted and not getting enough rest. But the husband is finding it difficult to tell mama to go without completing the omugwo. If the woman who just put to bed is still the one taking care of everyone else, then who exactly is doing omugwo for whom? What would you do if you were in her shoes?

I don’t understand this new style of omugwo. A woman has just given birth, but somehow the person who came to “help” is waiting for her to cook, serve food, and make sure they’re comfortable. What exactly did you come for? Omugwo is supposed to take stress off a new mother, not add another adult to the list of people she has to take care of. If the woman who just put to bed is still worrying about whether you’ve eaten, whether you’ve been served, and why you’re squeezing face because food isn’t ready, then you’ve completely missed the point. If you’re not coming to lighten her load, please stay in your house. A woman recovering from childbirth should not be carrying you too. Have we completely turned omugwo upside down, or is it just me?
