Often called the "Godmother of Rock and Roll," Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1973) was a pioneering American singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist who bridged the gap between sacred gospel music and secular rhythm and blues. She was one of the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her electric guitar, a technique that laid the foundational sound for the rock genre.

Simone Leigh (born 1967) is a pioneering American artist whose practice, spanning sculpture, video, and social practice, centers the subjectivity and labor of Black women. In 2022, she became the first Black woman to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale, where she was also awarded the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Participant in the central exhibition.
