"When I kept silent [about my sin], my bones wasted away
In my groaning all day long. Day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.” Psalm 32:3-4
Oh how merciful is the misery God sends his children who try to live a lie.
The apostle Paul never claimed perfection. However, he demonstrated in his life an observable passion to be like Christ, he pressed on toward the goal, and he made progress so as to say to his fellow believers, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (I Cor.11:1).
"Yahweh, Yahweh. A God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, but who will not clear the guilty.” Exodus 34:6-7
I.e., the guilty who will not repent.
"The Lord loves justice; he will not forsake his saints.” Psalm 37:28
In mercy God binds himself to his elect, so that not only is mercy but also justice at stake in their preservation.
“Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it — the Lord is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” —Jeremiah 33:2–3
"Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon! Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.’” Matthew 16:16-18
If you see Jesus as the glorious Christ, be amazed at your blessedness.
“Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!” —1 Chronicles 16:8–10
"Love the Lord, all you his saints! The Lord preserves the faithful
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.” Psalm 31:23
Even the last days of suffering will be cut short to preserve the elect (Matthew 24:22). Then comes the repayment (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9).
"The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.” Psalm 33:10-11
It is hard to imagine a more stabilizing promise in a world of arrogant nations.
There is cause for great concern if you look in the mirror of God’s Word and discover that you are lost. However, do not despair. A broken and contrite heart Christ will not despise, none who come to Him will be cast out, and whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord will be saved.
"Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy." 2 Corinthians 1:24
If every church knew that was their pastor's essential goal--not pleasure in sin, but pleasure in the beauties of Christ. . .
"To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ." (Ephesians 3:8)
He could not get over it.
His immeasurable hostility toward Christ replaced with heralding the unsearchable riches.
