OCaml is such an overlooked language. It’s so terse yet readable (once you put on your FP glasses) — logic shines through because there’s little boilerplate. Defining your problem with ADTs forces your code in the right shape. It looks like writing logic out on a whiteboard.

Keiki cheering section out tonight to cheer @HPU_MBB on to a hard-fought win! We also remember Kam Steinhoff and the importance of helmet safety. Kam was an @HPU_MBB player who tragically died in 2011 after a skateboarding accident. Mahalo nui for the free helmets 🧠🪖

@srikosuri is this a flex? as someone 1 year after becoming assistant professor, this is definitely not my experience either. i have never survived on so little sleep chronically than this semester when I developed/taught a new course. this includes after having 3 babies.

Will probably be flamed for this, but I agree with this take. Being an assistant professor was the easiest job I’d ever had in terms of number of hours and levels of stress (financial and otherwise), especially compared to postdoc or startup.

Tenured academia is really not "just a job." - can't be fired. - get a 5-month summer break. - complete flexibility on schedule/wfh - study what interests you -get paid more than enough to live comfortably. It's completely rational to work insanely hard to get this!

@anshulkundaje I think it's pretty likely that committee members are noting the C/N/S pubs, total publication count, and at least glancing at h-indices. I don't know how much this clouds their judgement for flying someone out without formally blinding them to this information.

This is accurate and why the impact factor problem needs to be solved from the top down. Senior academics who lead search committees should pledge to review all applications blind to journal/IF and pressure other institutions to commit to the same.

I tried to tackle hard questions in my research, thinking people would notice and I’d eventually get a TT job. I had one zoom interview in 5 years of applying. The system works the way it works; now I tell people don’t make my mistake of thinking it works the way you wish it did.

@vsbuffalo I had this kind of wishful thinking my first year of applying. It felt silly but then I completely changed my strategy in the 2nd year. Workshopped my written package, hired a public speaking coach and illustrator to deliver the “Netflix” version of my research

Repeat after me. FUCK citation counts. Just do meaningful work that you enjoy, do a great job making it accessible and present it honestly so folks can use it and build on it optimally. That's it.

Finished up teaching my last of 26 lectures for fall semester. This first time teaching was a huge learning experience for me but very rewarding. Long live ICS675!
