Last week I submitted by #PhD! "Managing 'The Returnee': Constructions of threat and citizenship in Germany" explores how foreign war volunteer returnees have been constructed and dealt with in Germany since the 1990s. It has been - and still is - quite the journey!

5 years after the defeat of the caliphate, more than 50,000 ISIS suspects and their family members are being held in a constellation of 27 US-funded camps and prisons run by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in NE Syria. We gained extraordinary access to a number of those facilities during a ten day reporting trip in the region.

Verdict against 🇩🇪German #IS #returnee: the Higher Regional Court in #Frankfurt convicted Deniz B. for terrorist membership and #warcrimes against property and sentenced him to five years in prison. Deniz B. is the first male returnee convicted for war crimes against property.

Today, the trial against 🇩🇪 German #returnee Deniz B. has started in Frankfurt. He has declared to largely admit to the charges (terrorist membership & war crimes against property) and a thorough questioning about his background and radicalization process has started.
