A Gen Z joined the team.
Week one.
During onboarding, the manager said,
“We sometimes stay late during peak periods.”
Gen Z nodded.
Then asked,
“Is that paid… or just expected?”
The room went quiet.
- No attitude.
- No rebellion.
- Just a question.
Later that day, HR mentioned “growth opportunities.”
Gen Z replied,
“Does growth include raises, or just more responsibility?”
Again, silence.
- No laziness.
- No entitlement.
- Just clarity.
That’s when the team realized something.
When people say
“Gen Z is lazy,”
what they really mean is:
Gen Z watched old generation
- skip meals,
- miss birthdays,
- work weekends,
- and burn out
only to be told
“budgets are tight”
and “be grateful you have a job.”
So Gen Z chose differently.
- They don’t romanticize overwork.
- They don’t confuse suffering with ambition.
- They don’t trade health for praise.
They still work hard.
They just refuse to work for nothing.
It’s not laziness.
It’s pattern recognition.
And honestly,
after everything old generation went through…
Can you really blame them?

Everyone says “Just learn basics and you’ll get a job.”
Basics, right? 😶
So I started with HTML.
Then someone said, “HTML alone is useless.”
Okay, added CSS.
Then, “CSS without animations is outdated.”
Added Flexbox, Grid, transitions, transforms.
Then, “Bro Tailwind is industry standard now.”
No worries.
Learned JavaScript.
But wait…
“Only JS? You need ES6+.”
Then closures.
Then hoisting.
Then event loop.
Then async/await.
Then promises.
Then memory leaks.
Then browser internals.
Now recruiter says:
> “Good, but where is React?”
So I learned React.
But not just React.
Optimized React.
Hooks.
Custom hooks.
Context API.
Redux.
Redux Toolkit.
Zustand.
Recoil.
Performance optimization.
Virtual DOM.
Then came:
> “Do you know Next.js?”
Okay.
SSR, CSR, SSG, ISR.
Routing, layouts, middleware.
SEO optimization.
Image optimization.
Then interviewer smiled and asked:
> “Backend aata hai?”
Sure 🙂
Node.js.
Express.js.
REST APIs.
MVC architecture.
JWT.
OAuth.
Auth0.
Rate limiting.
Security.
Then database:
MongoDB.
Mongoose.
Indexes.
Aggregation.
Transactions.
Then suddenly:
> “SQL bhi aata hai?”
Yes sir 🫡
Joins.
Subqueries.
Indexes.
Normalization.
Then DevOps entered the chat:
Docker.
CI/CD.
AWS.
EC2.
S3.
Nginx.
Linux.
Still not enough.
Now they want:
DSA.
LeetCode.
Codeforces.
System Design.
Low-level + High-level.
And finally HR says:
> “You are technically strong, but we’re looking for someone with 1–2 years experience.”
- Fresher with experience.
- Entry-level role, senior-level expectations.
- Low salary, high passion required.
But yeah…
“Skill issue hoga.”
“Market kharab nahi hai.”
“Bas consistency chahiye.”
Sure 👍
Let me just add 10 more skills to my resume and try again tomorrow.
