On today's International Women’s Day, let us remember a simple truth: HIV thrives where gender inequality persists. But when women and girls have justice, safety, & are empowered — HIV falls. I honour the women leading change and demanding a world where every girl can thrive. Because ending AIDS begins with rights, justice, and action — #ForAllWomenAndGirls. #InternationalWomensDay #ChoiceManifesto #GenderEquality #EndAIDS #IWD2026

Community voices are technical expertise. From adherence and linkage to community‑led monitoring, their leadership saves lives. As Lenacapavir rolls out for HIV prevention, we must track equity, dismantle access barriers, and ensure community priorities drive decisions. #CommunitiesLead #EndAIDS2030

Young people must not be afterthought. HIV services must be youth‑led, privacy‑protective, and integrate SRHR – designed with young people and properly resourced. When youth shape what gets delivered, outcomes improve—and no one is left behind. #YouthLead #EndAIDS

Meeting with Civil Society leaders last week in 🇰🇪 Nairobi, we discussed how communities & key populations must remain at the centre of the HIV response. Shrinking civic space and stop‑work orders risk reversing hard‑won gains. Inclusion isn’t symbolic—it saves lives. Policy and practice must support universal health coverage, to protect people living with and at risk of HIV. #endAIDS #UHC #ZeroDiscrimination

Our exchange reminded me why sustainability must stay at the centre of our work. Governments are preparing for long term financing of their HIV responses. @UNAIDS will continue championing sustainability planning, supporting countries to build strong, people-centred systems that last. The future of the response must be country-owned, equitable and grounded in human rights.

Inspired by our discussions—from better data quality and spotlighting blind spots, to strengthening sustainability, integration, and health sovereignty. Your insights on community needs, mobile populations, access to medicines, and equality are critical as we accompany communities and countries on the path to ending AIDS by 2030. Thank you, @UNAIDS colleagues, for your dedication to the people we serve. 🙏🏾 #EndAIDS #GlobalHealth

As part of events to mark International #DayoftheGirl a few years ago, I was invited to write a letter to myself as a young girl. Here's what I wrote. October 12, 2020 Dear Winnie, You’re 12 in this photo with mum and dad. You’re excited to be starting a new school far away from home. But you’re also scared. I understand why. You’re scared to be away from your parents. You hate getting up early to take a cold shower and walk up a hill. Up to this day I still don’t like getting up early! But it’s worth it. Education is priceless. The army has just overthrown the government in Uganda, and you’re scared to be under the dictatorship of Idi Amin, in which even miniskirts and lipstick are banned, and soldiers use any excuse for violence. But it will fall. You will make it through. You will face further challenges later. At your next school you will be the only girl in your class. Later you will have to leave the country and be a refugee in the UK. And that thing now where many assume that because you’re a girl you’re not equal to boys - well that never goes away, everywhere you go! I want you to know this though: you will overcome. You’re stronger than you realise. If you take a deep breath you’ll find a way to solve most problems. Try those things that they say are not for girls like maths and physics and computer science! Because there’s nothing that’s for boys and not for girls. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to fall. Brush yourself and get up. From your small village of Ruti, there’s no limit to where you can go. And wherever you go, Ruti will always be your home. I want to tell you too the most important lesson you’ll learn. By joining together with other people, you’ll be able to build together the power to put right some of what’s wrong in the world. With others, you will have many adventures, achieve many good things in service to the world, and you will be happy! All the best, Winnie

We stand with Kenyan communities & civil society calling on leaders to withdraw proposal to sunset @UNAIDS. Dismantling UNAIDS would be catastrophic for the global #HIV response. The epidemic is far from over & demands sustained leadership. 🔗 Statement: bit.ly/SupportUNAIDS

Today I saw one of the complications of meningitis first hand.. visual loss. Cryptococcal meningitis is a serious opportunistic infection and a major cause of morbidity and mortality among PLHIV with advanced disease. This is why we encourage compliance with ARVs. RT widely ✅
