Stanford paid 35,000 people to quit Facebook and Instagram for 6 weeks Depression dropped. Anxiety dropped. Happiness went up. Women under 25 on Instagram saw the biggest gains That was 6 weeks. I'm going a full year.

🦔A global survey of 3,750 executives and employees found that 54% of workers bypassed their company's AI tools in the past 30 days and completed work manually, while another 33% haven't used AI at all. Combined, eight in ten enterprise workers are avoiding or rejecting technology their employers spent an average of $54 million deploying this year. Only 9% of workers trust AI for complex business-critical decisions compared to 61% of executives. Workers lose the equivalent of 51 working days per year to technology friction, up 42% from last year, almost exactly equal to the 40-60 minutes per day Goldman Sachs says AI saves workers who use it correctly. My Take I covered the cognitive surrender research last week showing workers under time pressure accept faulty AI outputs 73% of the time. This is the other half of that story. Workers avoiding AI entirely have figured out the tool doesn't work well enough for their tasks, or haven't been given the training or incentive to make it work. Neither group is irrational. One is surrendering judgment under pressure, the other is declining to engage, and both are responses to the same problem: companies deployed the technology before figuring out what they wanted employees to do with it. The trust split between executives and workers on AI for business-critical decisions, 9% versus 61%, explains why these rollouts keep failing. Executives are buying the pitch. Workers are living with the product. Companies spending $54 million on deployments that eight in ten employees aren't using have a measurement problem as much as an adoption problem. Hedgie🤗

🚨 Stanford researchers just exposed a weird side effect of AI that almost nobody is talking about. They call it the "Artificial Hivemind” and it is quietly homogenizing human thought. Researchers built a massive dataset called Infinity-Chat (26,000 real-world, open-ended queries) and tested over 70 frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Qwen. The goal was simple: when you ask an AI an open-ended question with infinite possible answers, how diverse is the output? Here’s how bad the homogenization actually is… When researchers asked 25 different models to simply “write a metaphor about time,” they didn’t get a beautiful spectrum of human creativity. Instead, almost every single model converged on the exact same answer: “time is a river.” A much smaller secondary cluster chose “time is a weaver.” Out of infinite creative possibilities, the entire AI ecosystem collapsed into just two basic ideas. This is what they call the “artificial hivemind” effect. It happens on two distinct levels: - Intra-model repetition: a single model will repeat the exact same conceptual output no matter how many times you reroll or sample it. - Inter-model homogeneity: completely different models from different companies independently converge on the exact same ideas. This is mind-blowing… because we use the same internet data, the same RLHF alignment techniques, and the same reward models across the industry, every LLM is collapsing into a singular, average worldview. Why this is genuinely dangerous… We are building tools that millions of people use daily for brainstorming, writing, and problem-solving. If every agent spits out the exact same “average” idea, it subtly shapes users’ cognitive patterns over time. It’s the long-term homogenization of human culture… the industry is optimizing for consensus instead of pluralism.

As we all comb through Meta's internal docs, released via the lawsuits, it's fun to discover that @jean_twenge and I were getting under Meta's skin by 2019. See the screenshot below, from: drive.google.com/file/d/1sWRm1R… They then ran their own RCT to show that Jean and I were wrong, but oops, they found that when people were randomly assigned to quit Insta or FB for a week, their mental health improved. They called it "Project Mercury." It is study 6.2 at metasinternalresearch.org They found that those who stopped using Facebook for a week "reported lower feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and social comparison" Their own researchers (all of whom had Ph.Ds) concluded that: “the Nielsen study does show causal impact on social comparison.” So whenever you hear the Meta talking point that the evidence is "just correlational," or that there is "no evidence of causality," know that this is not true, and they have known it's not true since 2019. Please check out the other 30 internal Meta studies we found and catalogued at metasinternalresearch.org Also, there is SO MUCH additional academic research demonstrating causality since 2019: osf.io/xsje9/files/hm…

it’s official - Anthropic just refused the Pentagon’s demands, dario’s statement is doesn’t fuck around: - “these threats do not change our position: we cannot in good conscience accede to their request.” - dario - he described the pentagons efforts to force him to enable claude for mass surveillance and autonomous killing weapons - dario’s response: mass surveillance is not democratic and Claude isn’t good enough to enable autonomous weapons - we won’t cave - dario will help governmenr transition to a NEW provider if they choose to blacklist anthropic. fucking wild - fair play for sticking by their code of honor.

Major new report on global trends in mental health, out today from Sapien Labs. Data from 2.5 million people across 85 countries. Some of the most important findings: 1) Young adults used to generally have good mental health, compared to older generations. But now, in ALL countries examined, they are doing badly compared to older generations in that country. 2) "Four key factors have emerged that together predict three quarters of this effect. These are diminished family bonds, diminished spirituality, smartphones at increasingly young age, and increasing consumption of ultra-processed food." 3) The decline of young people's mental health is "most pronounced in the wealthier and more developed countries." They note that it is in such countries that smartphones are given earliest, junk food is most heavily consumed, spirituality is most diminished, and family ties are looser and often weaker. 4) "A younger age of first smartphone ownership is associated with increased suicidal thoughts, aggression, and other problems in adulthood." 5) Here is their summary of findings on early smartphone ownership: "GenZ is the first generation to grow up with a smartphone. Among this group, the younger they acquired their first smartphone in childhood, the more likely they are to have struggles as adults. These struggles extend beyond sadness and anxiety to less discussed symptoms, such as a sense of being detached from reality, suicidal thoughts, and aggression towards others. The effects arise through disruption of sleep, increased risk of exposure to harmful online content, predators, and explicit material as well as increased probabilities of cyberbullying during crucial developmental years. Excessive time spent on smartphones also diminishes the development of social cognition that requires learned interpretation of facial expressions, body language, and group dynamics. The negative impacts are particularly sharp below age 13." The report is short, accessible, and important. Read it here: sapienlabs.org/global-mind-he…

Apple has just published a paper with a devastating title: *The Illusion of Thinking*. And it's not a metaphor. What it demonstrates is that the AI models we use every day - yes, ones like ChatGPT - don't think. Not one bit. They just imitate doing so. Let me explain: 🧵👇
