🇻🇦🇮🇷 The Vatican just gave Iran's ambassador its highest diplomatic honor. Pope Leo XIV awarded Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari the Papal Order of Pius IX today. The Vatican says it's standard protocol for long-serving envoys. Iran's state media called it recognition of "Iran's extraordinary contributions to peace and interfaith cooperation." The Order of Pius IX dates to 1847 and gets handed out routinely to ambassadors after a couple of years on post. Dozens of countries have received it. But the timing is hard to ignore. The Middle East is on fire, Pope Leo XIV has been actively pushing for de-escalation, and Iran is facing sustained criticism for persecuting the exact religious minorities the Vatican exists to protect.
