@tdietterich @roydanroy (2) Given auxiliary examples to contrast normal data seems much more effective to learn relevant representations than I thought. Hence self-sup. or OE methods currently set also the SOTA. Learning relevant representations purely from normal data seems hard-to-impossible though.

@tdietterich @roydanroy (1) Representation ultimately (fundamentally somewhat also trivially) defines anomaly. Under different representations, the same data instance can either be normal or anomalous. Thus, anomalies are inherently contextual (the cat/dog example in our review examplifies this).

Who's an expert in anomaly detection out there? What's are the key texts in this area? Does it have a rigorous theoretical foundation? That handles the adversarial aspects? And what about deep learning and in-roads there?

Cells live and interact in 3D tissues but pathology and spatial omics typically rely on 2D sections... Excited to share our latest efforts in @N_Rajewsky lab to generate a 3D, multimodal atlas of a human tumor! Find out what we learned: video + 🧵! 🔗 bit.ly/3D_lung_cancer

Is there any reason other than profit for why we are creating dozens of AI systems to generate art rather than focusing on algorithms that help us to fight climate change, solve cancer, or can be used to support mental health?

Could deep learning take data compression to the next level? Can we do better than established codecs for images, video, audio, and other types of data? Check out our upcoming #NeurIPS2022 Tutorial on Data Compression with Machine Learning! @karen_ullrich @YiboYang (1/4)

If someone develops a new learning algorithm (model + objective function), would you like to see a figure showing the model (for example as a graph) or rather pseudocode that demonstrates how the algorithm works?

@edcatmull on “paper killers” vs. “idea protectors” in academic peer review. Cheers to all the idea protectors out there. 🍻 #AcademicChatter
