@tcarpenter216 Gen.jl thesis is a great "computer science" take on building models as arbitrary programs and doing diverse things with them. The likelihood is very simple in this formulation. Great for "programmer brain" at least.

Stats folk -- If I'm creating some bespoke model, how tricky is it to derive the likelihood function (and thus the log likelihood). Trying to build muscle in deriving those equations and then coding up an optimizer to fit the parameters

It never gets old hearing teachers saying "shit!" to preschool kids.

One word that English needs to borrow from Swedish is "shit." As in a mild exclaimation, like "darn," that a small child might say in the middle of a family Christmas special on TV.

@lukego @ffkiv We definitely should. I might just get on the plane to Sweden sometime in the spring 🙂

@NTNikolaev @ffkiv That was fine work we all did together back in the day! Should have a beer to celebrate somehow somewhere 😎

@ffkiv It's been 10 years since the first vhost-user patches towards QEMU were submitted. Who would have thought it would still be useful. @lukego 😀

@lukego About to visit family and I'm feeling an itch to work on my Cant more than anything realer like bayesian inference, for now. Have some reading queued on gen.jl...

Ending this week on the thought: is Nested Sequential Monte Carlo sampling eerily similar to Monte Carlo Tree Search? Have to chase up how/if MCTS is applied in Bayesian context.

@lukego Interesting. I just found a couple hits on "bayesian mcts" though probably unrelated to the direction you're looking to here. (sorry I'm late replying & happy holidays!)

@abecedarius Gen.jl has an example where they call out to PyTorch to train a neural network to make proposals: gen.dev/tutorials/pyto… That sounded pretty out-there to me the first time I encountered it but maybe it's the common sense approach to good proposals in high dimensions.

@abecedarius Generally I'm warming up to the idea of black-box proposal distributions in Sequential Monte Carlo e.g. via deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc. I mean, why not? Seems like (...) it should be straightforward to meet the requirements for Bayesian hygiene e.g. proper weight.

I should have just built my own camper. You can get large covered trailers for the fraction of the cost of a camper and they are typically build better. Plus you get to build the inside exactly as desired and know it's done right.

Living in a RV is like renting a very small apartment where you have to pack up and move your family out any time anything needs repairs. Except you still pay rent and they can take months to let you back in and often things still aren't fixed when you return.
