Students who took notes by hand scored ~28% higher on conceptual questions than laptop note-takers. Writing forces your brain to process and compress ideas instead of copying them.

@BrandonLuuMD Active vs passive. I agree. Feynman spoke about documenting how you think something work, eg a math calculation. Then evaluate. Every time I am asked, ‘How do you spell [pick a word], Daddy?’ … my answer is ‘How do you think it should be spelled?’

@TommyWhitehill @BrandonLuuMD And then with your garbled word you go to a dictionary and try to find the actual spelling. Now when I can’t spell a word correctly and autocorrect doesn’t recognize my attempt, I type it on my google bar and voilà there it is. Well at least 98% of the time.

@PackingLight2 @BrandonLuuMD For me the copy/ edit/ fix sloppy writing part was as or more important than the first-time writing. Having an app fix the writing, at least for me, defeats most of the purpose. Sure I can read the words weeks later, but the content itself is still a mess.

@BrandonLuuMD Yes!!! And you can take great written notes on an iPad if you need to keep notes electronically. Great apps like Notability make it easy. Have Cornell notes templates (amazing way to take notes) and others!

@BHLevesque @BrandonLuuMD @RunnerBliss I still haven’t made the leap to have typing work the way handwriting does. I know people who have. I’m still a hunt-and-peck typist. Quite often (like right now) it is one-handed hunt-and-peck. 😝

@BrandonLuuMD @RunnerBliss I have converted into laptop notes at work vs writing - i used to hand write, then type up after for more reinforcement. Now i just type during calls as it forces me to pay close attention and be able to summarize what the points were. If i dont take notes i am less effective

@JackRedOaks @nipun_gd @BrandonLuuMD Copying one’s notes gives the ability to color-code, improve diagrams, add text material (or stuff from other peeps notes when you dozed off), totally reorganize notes for the zoology prof who never talked in a linear fashion.

@nipun_gd @BrandonLuuMD Not really. There's a real connection between the hand and the brain. The best way is to take notes by and THEN type them up for easy organizing and reference.
