Funny how memory works. Republicans are mad Democrats didn’t clap for Trump’s lies. But during Joe Biden’s 2024 SOTU, they sat stone-faced for: “No billionaire should pay less than a teacher.” “You can’t love your country only when you win.” “Cap drug costs at $2,000.” They wouldn’t stand for fairness. They wouldn’t stand for democracy. They wouldn’t stand for lower prices. So spare us the fake outrage now.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

If there was ever a moment for libertarians and conservatives to step up and join the rest of us, we’re in it. Americans have to unite and stop this descent from a freedom-loving nation into the kind of place where masked, militarized government agents are sent to politically noncompliant areas to roam the streets, terrorize civilians, and deploy violence with impunity.

This is savage. Most people under 40 probably won’t get it.
