This kind of stuff frustrated me so much, both as a student and a parent. This is a perfectly good question from a workbook — not a trick question. The student got the correct answer as intended by the workbook writer, and the teacher was clearly wrong. Happens a lot.
Sadly, the replies are filled with people who also don't understand.

Super smart educator right there.

@JAMsandwich4100 @XGillerdenBiri @mathsrick_ except the fucking exponent has a higher order of operations, so you subtract 5 squared in the bracket
if you want -5^2 to result in +25 you need to write (-5)^2 so you actually square -5
English

@XGillerdenBiri @mathsrick_ -5² = 25
So therefore the answer is 0.

English

@BielMenHaha @mathsrick_ Wrong. -5^2 = +25. Negative times negative equals positive.
The answer is 0

@violet_050224 @RiaryAme @hisagrmf Maybe everyone in Japan has supreme education and everyone always payed attention in school for everything all the time - couldnt say, I dont live there
but I guess its hard to argue across two languages with twitter translation, so we are probably just talking past each other
English

@violet_050224 @n_vadimov @hisagrmf Yeah, it is compulsory education
that takes literally nothing away from my point
thats like saying "oh its common sense that X happened in year Y" (history education)
that just doesnt make sense linguistically
it may be common KNOWLEDGE, but not common SENSE.
English

@RiaryAme @violet_050224 @hisagrmf Yeah, its not difficult to spot
but if you never heard of "sum of digit" why would you look
English

@n_vadimov @violet_050224 @hisagrmf Exactly? Thats not common sense, thats math knowledge, useless one at that.
it stops being "common sense" when you dont remember that from school X years ago
English

@violet_050224 @hisagrmf and you are B aswell, since its only common sense to you because you know the math facts
English

@hisagrmf 「説明下手なBがヤバい」…という話をしたいんだろうけど、
例えが一般常識すぎて、
「頭悪いAがヤバい」にしか読めない。

@KelleyKga 10-1? What do you mean 10-1?
This surely was not a test in the 10th grade?
English

As I expected, the question meant exactly what it said, it wasn't a trick, and the student answered perfectly. Thanks to Ethan for tracking down the answer key! x.com/etekweb/status…

Ethan@etekweb
@KelleyKga @Rothmus Can confirm - I was able to find an answer key online from a teacher's website for the entire worksheet: jessicamorrill.weebly.com/math-answers/p… Clearly written in the last screenshot is the correct answer for this question: "Marty's pizza was larger than Luis's"

@lyxxar Ich hab alles voll gekotzt war keine gute Idee
