@Aella_Girl This illusion is a godsend when I had phantom limb; looking at your extant limb through a mirror allows you to “scratch” the itchy phantom

I tried this with some friends and it mostly doesn't work. You can *kinda* feel the illusion if you really lean in, some of us were better at getting the illusion than others, but it is not very strong.

@GergelyOrosz I also find slots boring, but love the social aspect of craps: I find myself yelling with the whole table and high-fiving strangers. We have to fight to retain our humanity in systems that want to turn us into zombies

Yep, not the gambler type it seems I lost $40-50/hr playing 1-2 cent machines (where the cheapest spin is around a dollar, ha, the marketing!) and it was less fun for me + more expensive than going to the movies for sure x.com/staysaasy/stat…

Spent a few hours in a casino with slot machines to see what it feels like. Knowing that the house takes 5-15% of cash (so "winnings" are 80-95% across a large number of spins) made the outcome almost too boring. The UX of slot machines reminded me of predatory mobile games tho

My ancestors buried half their children. All mine are alive. My ancestors' house had a dirt floor. Mine is wood. I have indoor plumbing, I have hot water, I have never in my life hauled a full bucket half a mile and I probably never will. Do you know how rare it is, in human history, for small children to wear shoes? Mine have multiple pairs. I can speak to my relatives who live thousands of miles away, for free, at any time. Video, if we want video. With machine translation, if we speak different languages. The original Library of Congress had 740 books in it. I have more than that. If I run out of books in my home my local public library has 350,000. If I want to take a hundred books with me on vacation, they all fit on a device that fits in my purse. I have heat in the winter and AC in the summer and a washing machine and I have never, ever, ever had to scrub a dress clean by hand in the stream. I can look up recipes from more than a hundred different countries and I've tried dozens of them. I ride a clean and modern train across my city for $4, or take a robot taxi if I'm out too late for the train. I donate $40,000 every year to the cause of getting healthcare to the world's poorest people and even after the donations I never have to think about whether I can afford a book, or a pair of shoes, or a cup of coffee. There is a great deal more to fight for, of course. I hope that our descendants will look back on our lives and list a thousand ways they're richer. Maybe we ourselves will do that, if some of the crazier stuff comes true. But the abundance is all around you and to a significant degree you aren't feeling it only because fish don't notice water.

An experience changed the way I think about this: I had a cold with a strange minor symptom I'd never see a doc about. Asked an LLM on a lark, and it correctly diagnosed a medical emergency. This was a House, M.D. case so WebMD wouldn't have caught it.

I think some people, more commonly women, are better suited for babies than I am, such that they'd experience less suffering. I know if I had a baby I could do it, I am functional during hard crunch periods, but id: A. Be having them as a single mom (I'm not wealthy enough to hire reliable round the clock care for years, and I would 100% not want to put them in school) and B. My mental makeup is not well suited for childcare. I am extremely non-feminine in most ways related to early childhood rearing. I live like a teenage boy. I very carefully have constructed my life to be as free as possible from people needing things from me. I have cooked a meal once, maybe twice in my life. I am really messy. I don't like loud noises or being interrupted. I hate chores because they are boring and distracting (hence my lack of showering), and I spend more than is reasonable paying other people to do routine tasks. I'm really low neuroticism and don't mind when things go wrong. I have the "goofy absentminded dad" archetype. Again: I believe I would be a great mom and have forced myself to do hard things for a long time when I need to, but especially in the early years, doing it alone and with my psychology, would be an immense sacrifice that would definitely suck for me quite a lot. My drive to have kids is almost entirely to have made people who talk to me in full sentences.
