#NowSpinning the next six in Karajan’s big DG box. Bruckner Symphony No.3. I am generally a bit unsure about Karajan in the earlier Bruckner works, but I’ve only ever heard this Third once before. My first impression is that the opening lacks atmosphere!
@operamagazine And considered a late 20th c masterpiece - missed the London production - liked the recording - can’t imagine it being performed now - which is a shame.
Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) is one of the most chilling villains ever. She won the Final Lady vote over the studio’s protests, turning what could’ve been a supporting role into one of cinema’s most dangerous performances.
@mXwalker18@ATRightMovies It's a good one. I wish I had been at the first screening of the opening credits to witness Hitchcock's reaction to it. Something tells me he liked it! 🎞️
@rowenamezzo Going Tuesday - let me know how good.
Last few times I’ve seen these three sonatas at Wiggy - played without a break.
Can be a bit intense.
I visited Wilhelmine’s Eremitage - her summer palace - on my first visit to Bayreuth for the Peter Hall Ring in 1986 - but I’d never seen the inside of the tiny Schloss! I absolutely recommend a guided tour - some of the rooms - Japanese, Music, Chinese Mirror are little gems! 😈
#NowSpinning Sibelius Symphony no.7 with Eugene Ormandy and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. I love Ormandy in Sibelius and remember this to be a very fine performance. Let’s see if I still feel the same way.
@rowenamezzo@BudFestivalOrch@bbcproms I though the Beethoven was a little under powered in the hall - but the Bluebeard - wow, even without the mighty RAH organ.
Asmik/Pappano/Oscar/Strauss/the Bible...yes it's Salome & and an extraordinary evening with a standing ovation at the Barbican...icing on cake chatting with @hugh_canning & @larkingrumple
@MoonPavilion@LoveInner As a student I heard him conduct Sibelius 2 with the Philharmonia at Nottingham- not heard it before - it blew my mind.
Rach 1 is amazing
@LoveInner As a schoolboy in 1970s, I was obsessed by Beethoven 4 and a big moment was buying this LP. I also recall really upsetting my lovely piano teacher when having heard Vladimir A. play Op 10/2 in F major, I changed all the instructions dear Mrs Gordon had given me for my Grade VIII
Vladimir Ashkenazy was born on 6 July 1937. The recordings shown here introduced me to his art, starting with the conducting rather than piano playing. This is still my absolute favourite Rachmaninoff First Symphony. What are your favourite Ashkenazy recordings?
Left a new arrival at home for Classical Live @BBCRadio3 where @AilishTynanEire sings Schumann, Spohr and Mozart live from 1pm. Then after 2 to St James’ Chipping Campden for highlights from this year’s Music Festival. And yes that is a hen hatching a duckling.
