What if consciousness isn't confined to your brain but is woven into the fabric of the universe itself? That's the question at the heart of Mind-at-Large Project: A New Dawn. Register here ⬇️ ctr4process.org/conferences-ne…

THE HARD PROBLEM OF CONSCIOUSNESS: PANPSYCHISM · Can Panpsychism solve the hard problem of consciousness? · Is it easier to get physicalism out of consciousness than it is to get consciousness out of physicalism? · What does Panpsychism mean for the problems of combination? · How does Panpsychism invert the traditional hard problem of consciousness? And is this problematic? · What are the consequences of Panpsychism on the nature of reality, abstraction and our perceived external and independent world? · Is there something even more fundamental than physicalism and consciousness? All discussed with one of the most distinguished Panpsychists in modern times: Professor Philip Goff @StanfordPHIL @Philip_Goff Philip Goff on the Mind-Body Problem themontrealreview.com/Articles/On_th…

THE HARD PROBLEM OF CONSCIOUSNESS – WHAT WOULD A SOLUTION ENTAIL? 1. It is a problem but can it be solved by one of the following ways? · A causal theoretical role that conceptually links physical properties of the brain to mental states · A casual model explicitly stating the causal processes and mechanisms explaining how physical brain states cause mental states · A causal model is not formally required because mental properties are simply realized in physical properties and/or mental properties are a subset of physical properties via second-order realizability 2. There is no problem because............ · Mental states are identical to brain states · ‘Qualia’ has no ontological status, our inner world is just representational knowledge therefore there is no hard problem of consciousness · Illusionism - we systematically misrepresent our experiences as having phenomenal properties 3. There is a problem and it is unanswerable - given current paradigms · Scientific models cannot capture subjective experience by definition · Subjective experience cannot be reduced to physical properties so scientific reductionism is impossible when it comes to consciousness · Consciousness is fundamental. ‘Experience’, causal modelling, explanation in cognitive neuroscience and whether experience can actually be explained by the scientific method with Steven Pinker: themontrealreview.com/Articles/Probl… Do we have phenomenal qualia? Is experience just representative knowledge? And what does it mean for the hard problem of consciousness - with Frank Jackson: themontrealreview.com/Articles/Conve… Neuroscientific models of phenomenological ‘qualia’, Emergence, Realism, Illusionism and panpsychism with Susan Blackmore: themontrealreview.com/Articles/Conve… Whilst avoiding formal causation and identicalism but employing supervenience can Physical Realization address the Hard Problem of Consciousness? ‘The romantic movement is characterised … by the substitution of aesthetic for utilitarian standards. The earth-worm is useful, but not beautiful; the tiger is beautiful, but not useful. Darwin … praised the earth-worm; Blake praised the tiger.’ – Russell, 1946

Is science blind to human experience? In my latest conversation with @AdamFrank4, we explore: • The limits of scientific objectivity • Consciousness & cosmology • Meaning in a physical universe • Whether experience belongs at the foundation of reality youtu.be/xZX8Yepfwgw?si…
