Something happened in my area last Friday (Eid holiday) and it’s been bothering me. A neighbour had no light the whole day. Instead of reporting it early or waiting on ECG, she decided in the evening to get someone to “fix” it. Around 7pm, my light and about 10 or more other houseswent off at the same time. We step outside and there’s a guy coming down from an ECG pole in the area Turns out, he had changed the phases just to restore light to one house… at the expense of the rest of us. 10 houses off so 1 person can have power. We confronted him. First he said he was an engineer. Later, he said he’s a student. No permit, no authorisation just up on a pole. I called ECG, and they made it clear this is illegal and dangerous. We were even warned earlier that repeated incidents like this could get the whole area disconnected. And honestly, this isn’t even the first time. These “informal fixes” are becoming too common. We insisted he reverses what he did. He resisted. When he finally tried, cables sparked and part of the area went off again. Thankfully, ECG came in and restored power. They were ready to arrest both the guy and the person who called him. I had to step in to calm things down and let it pass as a warning. But now here’s the twist—the same neighbour is upset with me. Giving me attitude. Because she thinks I’m the reason ECG came… and not her. So now I’m the bad person for stopping something illegal that affected multiple homes? At what point did “fixing your problem” start meaning creating a bigger one for everyone else? Because this right here is part of why we keep having unstable power issues in some areas.
