@TheGreyMouser__ @MerriamWebster That's the in-universe explanation. I am aware of it. I am happy to say I enjoyed Solo very much. But the truth is space-travel in Star Wars is at the speed of plot. Always has been.

@mac_logo @MerriamWebster No, the explanation is that ships try to take a long way around a dangerous part of space to avoid getting sucked into a black hole. The Millennium Falcon was able get far closer than most ships can because of its speed, shortening the route. Hence, distance is the measure.

@brockpierson I threw mine out in a house move. It was useful for maybe 5 years at the most. USB sticks were just better at everything they could do.

Are you old enough to remember zip disks? They came in 100MB, 250MB, or 750MB, compared to the standard 1.44MB of a 3.5-inch floppy... And I still hated them for no reason.

@enigmoron @ShitpostRock2 You go outside in Unity and it's gorgeous up to 25-50m (in-game), then the LODing happens. The LODs are brutal in Unity. The game works very hard to keep your focus inside that bubble of detail, so you rarely notice the LOD popping in play. The designers really understood Anvil.

This game was made 12 years ago Remind me again why we need all the fancy, schmancy DLSS, ray tracing, and ultra-high-end graphics features in games today, when something like this can run perfectly fine on a GTX 1050?

@AvPOdysseyDB I actually like it. The actors, effects, cinematography, absolutely top-notch. But... The science is "Movie Science" and the scientists are "Movie Scientists". The plot relies on multiple idiot-balls being juggled simultaneously by people we are constantly told are "smart".

Prometheus (2012) I don't get why it gets so much hate.

@cmuratori If debugging has a fun part, this it it. Getting down to the CPU and seeing what weirdness happens. Also Matt Godbolt's Compiler Explorer godbolt.org is a very useful tool.

IDK, I "review" compiler output all the time. A good debugger makes this cheap and easy. The disassembly is always there, and it jumps out at you when there are codegen anomalies, which happens more often than you might think in optimized builds.

@TheRealZephryss Normally I defend the modern day... but not Black Flag. I want to see what they do with Animus Rifts in the new one. Got to be better than being a sneaky tablet.

@yapture As a Scot, I have to say the only times I felt out of my depth temperature-wise in the States was Las Vegas in the Summer- that was a a wee bit warm - and Minneapolis in Winter - that was a touch chilly. Don't care what the thermometer says - Britain has nasty weather.

@johncrickett People respect Delphi. It was a genuinely better product. But it didn't ship as part of MS-Office, so ... meh. I wonder if it's creator did anything of note after that?

Apparently a lot of people loved VB6. How about Delphi? Who was a fan? Who still is? What's it like these days?
