@curebores @ManaByte I cannot force you to detach from your current delusion. I have said my piece and tried my best to elaborate on how PC fucntionality works, it’s entirely up to you to comprehend it.

Good luck finding a lawyer willing to stand in front of a federal judge and argue, "Your Honor, my client's right to sneak hardware exploits past a video game's security system is protected by the Constitution." The case would be laughed out of court before the gavel even hit the desk. Banning accounts doesn't work against DMA hardware cheaters because they just buy a new $2 cracked account and do it again. Riot finally targeted the actual root of the problem, and the only thing being "destroyed" here is the cheaters' ability to ruin games for everyone else.
The Smeefly One@TheyCallMeSmeef

Hot take: Its morally wrong to destroy someones property because they cheated at your game. Banning them is a perfectly reasonable remedy. Enjoy the future class action lawsuit.

@curebores @ManaByte its sounds like you’re forcing your own understanding to be true. nowhere in there says they enable it by themselves. they enforce standards that make the consumers follow. they force you to enable it if you want to play their game. that has been the translation this whole time.

@curebores @ManaByte motherboard manufacturers issue BIOS updates to keep up with new and modern standards. and for one to access bios, they need to be physically with the computer. ring-0 privileges does not grant motherboard tampering.

@curebores @ManaByte and here I thought you’re more educated on me about computers telling me to stay away from yours? yes, even if it is running on ring-o “kernel” it cannot tamper with BIOS. them enforcing, is them forcing you to follow standard security protocols yourself.

@curebores @ManaByte it is physically impossible to change BIOS settings remotely. unless they are the ones issuing BIOS updates. remote control softwares arent even accessible during BIOS. motherboard manufacturers are the only ones who can “tamper” your bios remotely by issuing BIOS updates.

@macchimami @ManaByte Is "enforcing it" changing their BIOS settings to make their device stop working? It would seem so because this feature is enabled in BIOS and they say they are only doing it to accounts they think are using one.

@curebores @ManaByte They said they’re enforcing standard platform security features. Policies you need to follow. if you want to play their game, and you have a DMA device on, the standard is to enable IOMMU, so enable it or keep locked out of the game. This is that type of enforcement.

@macchimami @ManaByte Not supported by that post. They say that this feature is enforced on accounts they detect are using a DMA device which then causes that device to start throwing errors once enabled. That feature is a BIOS setting. Meaning that to enable it they must be editing that user's BIOS.

@macchimami @ManaByte x.com/riotgames/stat… "Our latest update enforces standard platform security features, like the Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU), on accounts identified as using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices." This would seem to contradict what Riot are saying.
Riot Games@riotgames

Well, that escalated quickly. There’s been a wave of claims by cheaters about Vanguard “bricking” their PCs, so let’s clear that up: Vanguard does not damage hardware or disable your devices. The photo we posted is a picture of cheat hardware devices that are sold explicitly for cheating in VALORANT (not normal PCs or PC components). Through our latest updates, Vanguard now makes those devices worthless for VAL, but does not in any way brick PCs or PC components or PC software. Our latest update enforces standard platform security features, like the Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU), on accounts identified as using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices. These protections are already part of modern systems and when enabled, they block DMA cheat devices (such as those shown in the photo) from accessing memory in downstream applications, like our games. If a cheat setup continues attempting to cheat after those protections are enabled, the system may generate hardware faults or instability. This is expected behavior under IOMMU when attempts are made to read protected memory. Disabling IOMMU allows the cheat device to function again, but IOMMU will still be required to play our games. This means the cheat device won’t work with our games, but your PC isn’t “bricked.” We would not, and cannot, impact your PC’s functionality in any other fashion. This functionality only applies to systems attempting to use DMA cheat devices, and players who are not using DMA-based cheat setups are not affected. We’ll keep investing in anti-cheat to protect competitive integrity, and we’ll keep being as transparent as possible about how those systems work.

@curebores @ManaByte no it doesnt. but it certainly does force you to enable it to be able to access and play their games. it wil be you who has to turn it on. if your BIOS “suddenly” has it enabled, then most likely a BIOS update has happened that patches IOMMU to be enabled to meet new standards.

@curebores @ManaByte idk what kind of fantasy you live on, nobody said anything about playing with BIOS. even then, once microsoft implements its changes after the crowdstrike incident, they will implement the same security measures with relevance to IOMMU.

@macchimami @ManaByte The settings in the BIOS are not for you to play with. You do not own the machine. You do not get to decide what hardware runs on it or not. I hope you're not a Riot employee because this exchange is telling me that you clowns should be nowhere near our computers.

@curebores @ManaByte IOMMU is a feature already designed for the purpose vanguard is making use of it. Even then, it only affects the memory vanguard itself is protecting. It’s not breaking or tampering your hardware, its just blocking the hardware’s “unauthorized direct access” to your PC’s memory.

Many people are against Riot causing cheater devices to blue screen or require a windows reinstallation. Although Riot specified that this does not brick their PCs and only deems them unable to run their game (Valorant) What do you think about it 🤔

@curebores @ManaByte you basically debunked your own arguement. since its already on your bios, your computer manufacturer implemented it. riot is merely making use of it to make security concrete by not letting suspicious and vulnerable hardware run preemptively. that’s the purpose.

@macchimami @ManaByte Tamper: interfere with (something) in order to cause damage or make unauthorized alterations. Changing your bios setting so that hardware you want to run on your PC no longer does is unauthorised tampering, and criminal.

Crazy how as soon as this dropped, everyone suddenly became an expert on the topic here on Twitter. There must be a reason if you’re not part of the dev team of the best anti cheat system in the world, right? Only people mad about this are either cheaters or delusional

@Gris0lm @swift_reviews if this was really a legal dispute, “law experts” would already be all around it trying to grab their money because if they get riot, it gives them the right to go after the software and hardware companies riot needed to certify their products with and make it run

I usually don’t tweet about these type of things often, but I’ve been seeing it a lot particularly in Valorant and in the last couple years. It does not matter how popular, hard working, or talented someone is, there will always be consequences. I don’t know when this idea got lost for so many people over the last couple years, but it was a very well-known thing when I started esports 10 years ago. Your image as a person is EVERYTHING nowadays, and its astonishing that orgs/peers don’t try to help or train for it especially with the increased use of social media and the influence it has our on life and work. Basically, don’t be stupid online OR in person, its not that hard 👍
