21-year-old Olympian Payton Jacobson has been wrestling Greco full-time since right after his sophomore year of high school. This is unique in America. It is not unique anywhere else on the planet.

Our High Performance Greco Program has it’s first Olympian! Payton Jacobson was apart of the first class of the High Performance Greco Program. He went Fulltime Greco at 16 bypassing HS folkstyle. Bill Kahle is his personal coach from Ringers Wrestling. He trained Fulltime with Bill and attended the HPG program. Payton currently attends Northern Michigan University and trains at their National Greco Roman Training Site. Andrew Bisek and Parker Betts head the program. All my athletes are very special to me because they commit their life to a singular goal. They forgo the common path for the process we offer bypassing HS to train Fulltime Greco. #GoGreco #ParisOlympics

Agree. The D1-or-bust mentality in wrestling isn’t necessary. Nobody is going to the pros. Non-D1 guys wrestle on the senior level. More people would have a better experience if we didn’t treat these Divisions as lesser. Ultimately this should all be about having fun.

Tulsa Nationals- I walk by a dad… “I didn’t fly all the way to Oklahoma for you to wrestle like this.” If your statement starts with I ….you’re making it about you. If your kid isn’t showing gratitude for the opportunity I get it. If your kid lost or didn’t wrestle how you expected and your statement is “I spent all this money, I spent all the time…..” You’re making it about you. What happened to the memories you made? The time you had with your child. This weekend I had one on one time with my boys. They got time being a kid playing games with close friends. They had the opportunity to travel and I had the opportunity to give them that. That is what I’ve worked for….the opportunity to take my child places and let them grow from their experiences. Your child’s results do not reflect your parenting, but their character does. Let me tell you what you are reinforcing to your child: Good Performance = love and attention Bad Performance = time wasted together You’re going to end up with a child who resents you and this sport. We are all guilty of holding something over our children. What I’ve found as a once performance driven child is that I struggled as an adult not equating my worth to what I had to offer others by my performance. Kids can be held to expectations on the mat without equating their worth and your time to their results.

Big takeaway from Super 32s so far…you have to build your body. Wrestling skill alone doesn’t cut it.

Coaches: stop saying “That won’t work against somebody good”. Why take options off the table in such a creative sport? Allow wrestlers to understand their style and what is high percentage for THEM. Basic skills matter but allow your unconventional wrestlers to be unconventional.
