A viral video showcasing China's Dunhuang 100 MW solar tower plant has captured global attention this week. Around 12,000 computer-controlled mirrors focus sunlight onto a 260-metre tower, heating molten salt that stores energy and generates clean electricity even after sunset. Operational since late 2018, the plant demonstrates reliable renewable power using thermal storage technology. It inspires hope for a greener future amid growing climate concerns, with India also expanding its solar ambitions. Impressive Desert Innovation The plant, developed by Shouhang Hi-Tech in Gansu province's arid landscape, covers about 7.2 square kilometres. Its roughly 12,000 heliostats (each around 115–116 m²) reflect sunlight to heat molten salt to over 500°C. The stored heat produces steam to drive turbines, allowing power generation for up to 11 hours after sunset. Officials from Shouhang have highlighted the project as a milestone in overcoming solar intermittency through smart engineering and innovation. Background of the Project Construction began in 2016 as one of China's early commercial concentrated solar power demonstration projects. It was connected to the grid in December 2018 and achieved full-load operation in 2019. The technology addresses a key challenge of traditional solar panels by storing energy as heat rather than relying solely on batteries. Similar projects are now expanding across China as part of its carbon neutrality goals, proving that large-scale solar can deliver steady, round-the-clock clean power.
