I wrote about the difference between Kyle-Gibson-type middle-aged-pitcher fantasies (using your wits and guile to escape certain death) and the Lance Lynn type (propping yourself against a wall and blasting through waves of your enemies until you die) mademdashes.substack.com/p/kyle-gibson-…

Ultimately innings like this are just random, but I'm not sure why you would put a low-leverage ground ball guy who is sufficiently bad fielding his position that I have noticed it into a close game with runners on base

Chris Roycroft with the bases loaded is a false-flag operation by those of us in the anti-bullpen movement

Between the MLB ball and any changes he's made in the last few years it does seem to have gotten less weird, sadly—back in 2023 it was at 2655 RPM with a 13.5 IVB, but in spring it's been 2462 RPM / 15.1 IVB.

Very sad that Cade Winquest's weird fastball has escaped the system (for now) but I wish him the best
Gary Phillips@GaryHPhillips

Cade Winquest didn't post the best numbers this spring, but the #Yankees liked his addition of a sinker & the reimplementation of his cutter. They also tend to preserve depth this time of year. Now Winquest, the team's first Rule 5 Draft pick in 14 years, is poised to make his MLB debut. Should it happen in San Francisco, his parents will be there watching. nydailynews.com/2026/03/24/cad…

Come on man, do not rob Jordan Walker. He needed that

I am 100% sure that I'm just imagining that Jordan Walker hits an unusual number of foul balls on pitches in the zone, but man I'm imagining it so vividly

From this camera angle in particular it's impossible to understand why Dustin May ever scrapped the curveball

This is a good game to remember the next time we get a wave of posts attempting to blame a loss in a single-elimination baseball tournament on psychology, Wanting It Enough, team culture, etc

@jonmberra I would accept a piggyback starter arrangement

@mademdashes Starters in relief have been pretty terrible in this tournament though. Mostly because they aren’t going all out because they still have obligations to their teams.

It will not surprise anyone to learn that I think it's crazy to have relief pitchers on your national team. They weren't good enough to be starters!

Baseball teams might not love their starters going max effort for one inning stints in March but that's something for public shame to handle

@_nateschwartz @NerdsOnTheBat OK yeah I was wondering if this was partially related to the model changes Eno's talked about related to dropping the Nobody Has Sweeper Antibodies years from the model, but I hadn't noticed any changes to Liberatore's 2025 Stuff+ in Fangraphs yet. I love his changeup

@mademdashes @NerdsOnTheBat This was me pulling from the sheet (shh!), but I don't know if this is based on the model update or spring training parks recording stuff differently. Very aggressive and I think all the fastballs will still be around 95ish & breaking stuff 110-120. Change is a wildcard

@_nateschwartz @NerdsOnTheBat Do you have a sense of what he's changed that the Stuff model would love? Just eyeballing the spring data it doesn't look like there are any huge surprises, aside from way more IVB (+ more velo) on the cutter he's barely throwing. Was surprised to see slider velo is actually down

@NerdsOnTheBat I mean… he’s really not and that’s the cool part. Very excited to see what this looks like in an actual start

@FilterVaccine I think it's within this number of pitches, though there are some caveats with guys maybe throwing harder in shorter spring stints than they can in real starts

The one thing I really don't want is to see him in AAA again. Just feels like he hasn't been able to use that particular demotion for anything useful

Tough AB for Jordan Walker there. Five consecutive foul balls, including a hard one right down the line, then K on a fastball up. My current plan to fix him is sending him to Palm Beach for 30 days to let him try to rake against teenagers. Power-cycle the modem

@jonmberra That's definitely possible, and I hope it's the case, but some of those 91 mph four-seamers up looked max effort in a way that spooked me a little

@mademdashes I think it’s a lot more believable that he’s basically just a veteran not going all out. Many veteran pitchers routinely pitch a couple mph below expected in spring.

Splitting his slider into two pitches... I love that. It's an investment in someday being able to throw them 86 and 83 instead of 82 and 79
