Since #PrideMonth is trending, here is a true story - We were in a wine tasting tour in Gold Coast, Australia and there was a 70 yrs old same-sex couple in our group. Very charming and full of life (both of them had the same name - Robin). The ladies were together for over 30 yrs and still so much in love that you will be jealous.
The extrovert Robin told us how good the introvert Robin was at playing Guitar, how good she was at her job etc.
In 2018, they got married when same sex marriage became legal in Australia. The whole neighborhood got together to celebrate, bringing in food and decorations etc.
And then we spoke about why after living together for so long, marriage was important for them. Here's what she said - "Before marriage, If I am in the Hospital in an ICU, she will not be able to sign a paper or take a decision for me of any sort because we are not related in any way on paper. My brother, whom I haven't met in 35 yrs will have full rights to sign the hospital papers or even what to do with my body later."
That's when it stuck me how important that legalization of Gay Marriage is. Acceptance of same sex couples is not just about ensuring that they are not bothered but also giving them a legal right to be together.
