Pavey et al. report that cortical hyperexcitability in ALS is mediated by dysfunction of distinct inhibitory and facilitatory cortical neuronal populations. Restoring function of the dysfunctional cortical neuronal populations may have therapeutic utility. tinyurl.com/4ndbhfny
