Good Morning to you all! So yesterday I posted about the beginnings of the farming robotics journey and I figured I might as well show where it got to (and where I hope to pick it back up from some day) This version, affectionately called the MK5 follows the same core philosophy of the center pivot, a long* rotating arm made up of identical modules that covers significant amounts of land whilst being connected to a resource hub at its center. *Obviously two segments is not an efficient deployment but visually its easier to understand, hence the "shortbus" edition you see here. The most significant departure from the original is the robotic heads, instead of being fixed at regular intervals the heads can now move freely on a rail system that runs the entire length of the arm and can optimize their deployment for a variety of outcomes, the heads are also a modular unit and several different end effectors could be installed on a "sled" (including a Sentinel!) Its got a few more tricks up its sleeves but at its core, this system allows for complex multispecies productive ecosystems to be deployed, maintained and harvested whilst significantly reducing/eliminating inputs and agchem products. Deployed at scale a system like this can restore land, establish perennial growing systems, grow the most nutrient dense produce available, deploy programmatic ecosystems (I won't talk about that yet) and even enable landscape scale advertising (looking at you @elonmusk) All from a weird idea about pivot irrigators on a windy day in the Canterbury plains.

Morning all! happy Monday to my manufacturing homies, crush it this week! I build things in my head like a CAD program. However some projects go beyond the human scale and at that point I step into 3D modelling. Here is the earliest work on the farming robot way back in 2017, I had initially assumed I could retrofit current pivot irrigators so I built a 1:1 model of a pivot irrigator and started playing. the MK1 ended up being a mad collection of cable drives and robotics that likely wouldn't have worked in this application but it helped to see the concept and its shortfalls before committing further work. I also worked on some ideas for a masticating weeder (yes, yes its a funny word) that I would still like to explore in time. The final version of the robot bears almost no resemblance to this early concept but without it, the developed version wouldn't exist. Can anyone guess the fundamental flaw with this design? (hint, its not mechanical)

The interesting part is not just the funding. It is the structure. Founder Ben Cera (@Bencera) points to a new kind of startup model: smaller teams, more automated workflows, and AI systems moving deeper into the operating layer of company building.
