@NicoleOnRacing you can’t call it a battle when one of the drivers has no battery left so he’s a sitting duck. this isn’t about pure pace or who’s braver on the brakes, it’s about battery harvesting and deployment. to quote some drivers ‘it’s artificial’

I’m a little confused about what F1 fans actually want. Battery management but a ton of battles: bad DRS: bad KERS: bad V8/V10’s with minimal passing: bad (but at least they sound good?)

@the_zb_ could an adjustment be to let teams have bigger batteries?

My initial visceral reaction to the race has subsided. I admit I had a very strong negative reaction to what I saw. I’m calmer now. But that doesn’t mean several of the points don’t still stand. Here’s how I’m feeling: The race weekend, to me, had “allure value” because it was analyzing something new and it was the first time we saw the cars racing in earnest. But that isn’t the same as “race spectacle” value. I don’t think it had the latter, mainly due to the behavior of the cars. The “allure” value won’t sustain things for very long. Do I think it was a good race? Personally not my cup of tea. I don’t like how this formula seems destined to be extremely predicated on management. Will it be worse on some tracks than others? Very likely yes. But that will still characterize these cars unless changes are made. What we saw in reality is that the energy starvation mostly removed the opportunity for later braking moves, and for driver skill to make a difference in the high speed. Both of those things seem to be “off limits” due to harvesting needs. When I see that, it does make me feel like a core facet of F1 is just gone. It’s telling when you get two drivers with similar cars and a Tyre offset like Norris and Verstappen, and unlike we would’ve seen in GE, absolutely nothing happened because there wasn’t enough energy for anything to happen. Lots of “overtakes”… but is that honestly what they were? I feel this is a strategically inflated number, and I’m not at all shocked that F1 is promoting and highlighting that. It was predominantly state-of-charge position swapping, as drivers realized they could dump the battery to get ahead, but had no hope of staying there if they did so. With a few genuine moves sprinkled in. Some people may like this, but I personally don’t yet find it enjoyable. It hindered my enjoyment of seeing cars go W2W. Is it a new type of W2W? I suppose you could say that. But it feels more like a cat and mouse management game. I have zero desire for that to be such a huge part of the sport, I want to see a deeper level of unbridled aggression in the driving. The PU is what is currently holding that back, because the chassis seems better suited to it now. The “battles” on track looked very very different, due to everyone having to mostly converge on harvesting and deployment methods. It caused all but 2-3 engagements to be very lackluster and fizzle out. One positive - right now, the cars can follow more closely with less detriment than the 2025 cars. It feels like 2022 again. But just like then, the teams will surely be figuring out more aero tricks that generate outwash and turbulence that will push this in the “negative” direction, because that’s always how it plays out with aero. Qualifying, to me, was the worst part. I didn’t enjoy a single bit of watching super clipping and harvesting in high speed corners, on a flying lap that had to be built around energy constraints. This is akin to saying “we are going to put just enough fuel in the car for you to go hard in throttle about 80% of the time, now you decide.” I just absolutely do not like anything about that. Could Australia have been further down the “worst case scenario” end of the spectrum than other tracks? Yeah, probably so. I’m calmer. But my general impressions don’t really change - I think this is a generally poor regulation set that is bound by physics constraints, and they need to respond with some quick adjustments.

@the_zb_ it’s not a skills and pace motorsport anymore, it’s a battery management one. what have they done with F1, the pinnacle of motorsport?! losing 50-60km/h in a turn while full gas? horrible. Electrification or its current form of it will ruin F1.

@Andrettism yeah right, so all drivers are also too dense, except the Mercedes pair, as almost all of them complained about these cars? there isn’t a world in which you can convince passionate F1 fans that super-clipping is something acceptable in F1.

A question that I haven’t actually seen anyone ask yet. If you are Max Verstappen, are you now regretting not going to Mercedes while Toto Wolff was rolling out the red carpet for you to do so?

@thomasmaheronf1 frustrating thing is you could hear the drivers as far as 18 mths ago complaining about these exact potential issues. now these are real issues not just ‘potential’. only if FIA would’ve listened to the actual people that know how it feels to drive these cars 🤦🏻‍♂️

During testing, I wrote about feeling optimism that the new regulations would be 'alright on the night' once we actually got into a competitive weekend. But, seeing the realities of the new regulations, that optimism has vanished as quickly as the drivers use up their batteries. There's no doubt these power units are exceptional pieces of engineering, and continue to showcase the usual brilliance of the manufacturers. But it's difficult not to see the regulations now as anything but fundamentally flawed, and seeing cars unable to maintain their own momentum halfway down a not particularly long straight is not the direction #F1 should have travelled in. It's an overly complicated mess, and I fear it's a massive misstep. This is nothing to do with competition, or the pecking order. Seeing an F1 car essentially have its horsepower halved midway along a straight on a qualifying lap, before gently coasting into a corner like a pensioner heading out for mass, is not why any of us are here. #AustralianGP

Great goal but atrocious defending. Dreadful from United. Been so passive this second half. Ramsdale made a couple of great saves but nowhere near the sort of urgency you’d need or expect against 10 men.

16 points from a possible 18, a system that suits the players, a style that reflects and respects club traditions, players enjoying their football, pride back in the shirt and in the work, a caretaker who really cares. It’s Carrick you know. Good man-management that keeps even high-profile subs happy and ready, team heading back to the Champions League, connection with academy, reconnection with fans, all in it together, Manchester United again. It’s Carrick, you know it makes sense. #MUFC

Fascinating comments from @OscarPiastri on F1 2026. He says the new rules need some reform...: "I think it's just complex. There's a lot of things that we've never had to do before, and they are just challenging by nature, because some of them are not very instinctive. And when you've driven a certain way for the last 15 years, it's pretty tough to undo some of those things, especially when some of them are lifting on straights, or stuff like that. Obviously as a driver you never want to be lifting at any point. Even without some of the challenges that we've got and the things we need to address as a sport, ultimately, they are cars that are slower and they have less downforce and probably more power out the corners, so they're always going to feel difficult to drive and tricky. And that aspect is kind of one thing. And then there's all the aspects that are new. and need some reform..."

Verstappen: "As a pure driver, I enjoy driving flat out, and at the moment, you cannot drive like that" He was right, look at Turn 12: LEC and NOR were full-gas for ~300m, yet their cars couldn't exceed 240km/h! 😳 '26 #F1 Rules allow the ERS to generate NEGATIVE power (recharge battery) when the driver is full-gas, up to -250kW. As the ICE power is ~400kW, the resulting power is as little as 400-250=150 kW... about half that of a Formula 3! ⚠️ The driver is full throttle, yet it's the software that decides whether power should be 200hp (240km/h in T12) or 1000hp (330km/h on the main straight), or something in between: the engineers have more control on the instantaneous power than the driver! Therefore, LEC and NOR didn't have to lift in T12, as the power was controlled electronically there Compared to 🟧NOR, 🟥LEC: -🟡Had more deployment on the main straight 🔋(gaining 0.2s!) but 🟢less at lap-end 🪫 -🔵Braker later, losing on exit -⚪️Lifted way less in T6-7, due to better downforce and/or confidence What's your opinion? #F1Testing
