i'm so tired of setup/payoff stuff in movies. exhausting when the film pays eye-rollingly obvious special attention to like five different items or concepts to trick you into having an empty jolt of recognition later on. it's cheap.

@siteunderconst1 @capybaroness @EPM108 This is a bit of an underdiscussed casualty of the adaptation of the novel. The ‘amnesia’ and ‘crew death’ mystery go hand in hand, but it requires too much exposition to explain both and the film needs to get to the A plot swiftly to function from there.

@capybaroness @EPM108 personally I thought a lot of the Chekhov’s Gun stuff in the movie wasn’t even a misdirection, just bad writing. “I don’t know WHY my shipmates died” is just never returned to, for example, and there was never a payoff moment to misdirect from
