i asked llm about this. it defaults to safe advice, because if llm is wrong about leaving, the downside is opportunity cost. people could have built something but if not, its not the end of the world. the other solution, asking people to stick around has high downside. Maybe, it's the right call most of the time, but the 1% chance it won't be has real actual harm. So, it's not because its trained on reddit (though that plays a part) but it's engineered to optimize for safety. geared towards the advice which would not create a PR disaster, or negative publicity. safety of the ai companies. this is probably the biggest blind spot for anthropic and other companies. individuals go on reddit / seek advice / therapy when there is something extreme. most people asking llm are not at the advice stage. all llms are going to do is bring up a bunch of people very articulate about what they feel but flee the moment something gets a bit messy. probably reflective of the culture at large as well. below is how opus answered it:
