@TheOmniLiberal You can test this by unplugging your mic and cranking the gain on the preamp vs cranking it on the compressor. The “noise” (if any) should sound exactly the same.

@TheOmniLiberal Depends on the preamp design, but no. Most modern designs have noise thresholds well below creating any audible issues. Line out amplifiers may create a little noise, but (assuming your compressor is DSP/plugin) you won’t have that issue.

Microphone/compressor question (mic is either an SM7B or a RE20, interface is an RME UFC or UFX, versions irrelevant) Is there a preference in having 50dB of gain on a pre-amp, vs 30dB of gain on a pre-amp and 20dB of make-up gain in the compressor, assuming all of the compressor settings are neutral? More sepcficially, is there any argument to be made for adding more make-up gain in the compressor to avoid catching up background noise on the mic? Or will this basically sound the same?

So it was shocking to hear @PierrePoilievre call them “drug dens” today. It was only weeks ago that he was promising to provide yoga at beautiful rehab centres to bring our loved ones home drug-free. Today he dropped the act, ditched the compassionate language entirely, and showed he really doesn’t care about our loved ones at all, promising to defund, close or prevent these services from operating … one of the very few tools we have against the toxic drug supply.
