@TeamCommunity That made me feel like I wanted to be part of this community and encouraged me to do so since 2017. Also I think one major factor was also because that was the year where I saw people like Cheekay and @NaomiFontanos as the ones shaping the agenda and part of the opening. ❤️

@TeamCommunity IFF was the only space that made me feel welcomed & safe as a woman of color. I felt organizers consider safety and equality seriously, eg. telling people to pauce before they share or ask a question b/c others might need time to raise their hands. (1/2)

29 men were reportedly killed in a massacre in Myanmar's Mon Taing Pin in May 2022. @RadioFreeAsia has now identified some of the victims and spoke to survivors. It is a case study highlighting the concerning trend of junta attacks on civilians in Myanmar rfa.org/english/news/s…

They committed genocide on Rohingya minority and still committing #CrimesAgainstHumanity & #WarCrimes across country. Junta doesn't care about the education nor children's rights. They even burn down schools mass killing on children under age. (2/3)

In mid-2017, top #Myanmar army officials held secret talks about the persecuted Rohingya minority. They had become “too daring”, one said. “Area clearance” was needed. Weeks later >700,000 were driven to Bangladesh in a crackdown the U.N called genocidal. reuters.com/investigates/s…

It is apparent now, more than ever, that such technology has become a tool to oppress pro-democracy movements under the illegitimate military junta which employs it to track, arrest and even kill activists. (8/8)

Myanmar people are well aware of the presence and dangers of watchful eyes on every corner in big cities such as Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw. The protesters took inspiration from Hong Kong, and covered, or even destroyed, CCTVs in some areas during the protests. (7/8)

While we don't know the specific equipment acquired, we do know Huawei CCTVs are the predominant choice. However, there is too little info about what capabilities these systems have and how they are used, particularly in relation to face and licence plate recognition. (6/8)

High-tech CCTVs (such as those equipped with face recognition) are not the only Huawei products potentially encroaching on public space in the county; Huawei has also been involved with many aspects of Myanmar’s digital transformation, from banking to cloud services. (5/8)

Who builds and supplies this technology? Regardless of the procurement process used, we have found that @Huawei equipment was ultimately deployed irrespective of the implementing company. Huawei has an almost universal presence in providing basic equipment. (4/8)

We also focus on procurement, finding systemic issues are rooted in how/why technologies are purchased in the first place. The procurement process is steeped in secrecy and nepotism, with little info about how to use, buy, and maintain tech available in the public domain. (3/8)

When we started the research with @article19org's @VidushiMarda and @donxle, it was a few months before the coup. We identified the CCTV projects in Myanmar’s cities which should be scrutinised to uncover possible risk areas. (2/8)

This may b less than a minute, but trust me, it took days to organize & could cost human lives. 3 days ago, the Junta got the strike info ahead, hit the protest w/ the car & arrested 8 members. ⚠️Myanmar has ground protests every day ✅Fund strike groups - safe houses needed
