THE FALL by John Gray Donald Trump's self-described "little excursion" in Iran has proved to be a march to disaster. His "major combat operation" has shifted from aiming to block Iran achieving a nuclear capability that was supposedly "obliterated" last June to unblocking the Strait of Hormuz and restoring the situation that existed before the operation began. Whatever the objective may be, the pre-war status quo is irretrievable. Trump cannot declare victory and walk away without surrendering the vital shipping conduit to Iran. With its proven capacity to wreak havoc on the world economy, a bombed-out military-theocratic dictatorship has begun the final unravelling of US imperial power. In the Middle East, the war has undercut the financial foundations of US hegemony. However the war ends, the result will be the re-emergence of Iran as a major power. As the arbiter of passage through Hormuz, Iran has become the deciding force in the global oil economy. If Trump opts to "finish the job" and launches a ground operation, the US will be dragged into a debacle larger than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined. While Nato may linger on in name, the transatlantic alliance is operationally defunct. America is returning to its pre-1914 trajectory as a civilisation separate from Europe. In the UK, the default position is to wait out the storm until sanity returns to Washington. Why Putin or Xi Jinping should exhibit similar patience is not explained. Could there be a better time for them to act? Ramping up hybrid warfare in under-defended Europe will give Putin leverage in any peace deal in Ukraine. With Trump having shifted military assets from the Asia-Pacific to the Middle East and running down munitions, Xi may be able to absorb Taiwan without firing a shot. This is not simply a case of the lessons of history being ignored. Trump's war looks more like an example of what Sigmund Freud described as repetition compulsion – an unconscious process in which the mind acts out what it cannot properly remember. A creature of the moment as he may be, Trump seems driven by an impulse to reimagine the past and reassert American – and his own – greatness. When an infantile fantasy of omnipotence comes up against unyielding realities, the response is inchoate rage. Psychopathology may be more illuminating than geopolitics at this point. In a more profound sense than is commonly recognised, Donald Trump does not know what he is doing. His little excursion is a point of no return in America's retreat as a global power. You spend years in American schools hearing about the matchless briliance of the US Constitution and political design, but the inability of that system to meaningfully confront Trump at a moment like this makes even some tinpot Latin American dictatorships look responsible.

The American education system never taught empire. Not really. Not honestly. It taught discovery instead of conquest. It taught manifest destiny as geography instead of genocide. It taught the Cold War as a defensive struggle against totalitarianism, not as a fifty-year campaign to prevent any country from choosing an alternative economic model. It taught Vietnam as a tragedy of good intentions, not a deliberate experiment in using maximum force to terrorize the Third World into compliance. Every atrocity was framed as an aberration. Mỹ Lai was a few bad soldiers. The CIA coups were regrettable excesses of a complicated era. The embargo on Cuba is an outdated policy that just hasn't been updated yet. The Iraq war was a mistake based on bad intelligence. Not a war crime. Not a pattern. Not the predictable output of a system that has always prioritized power over human life when those two things come into conflict. Aberration. Mistake. Tragedy. Exception. Never: this is who we are. This is what the system does. This is not a bug. And so each generation of Americans arrives at adulthood believing they are the inheritors of something noble that occasionally fell short, rather than the beneficiaries of something imperial that occasionally felt bad about itself. The distinction matters enormously. Inheritors of noble failure can be disappointed without being destabilized. Beneficiaries of empire cannot hear the truth without feeling the floor tilt. So they were never told the truth. And the ones who try to tell it now are called foreign agents, are called divisive, are called anti-American. Because in a country built on a lie about itself, truth is always a political act.

In the 1990s, wildlife authorities moved about 40 young male elephants a few hundred miles closer to Johannesburg. Without older bull elephants around to establish hierarchy, these young males became unusually violent. They attacked each other, pushed cars off roads, and killed white rhinos. The biological explanation was stunning. When young male elephants approach maturity, testosterone floods in at over 100 times normal levels. This phase, called musth, typically lasts weeks. In Pilanesberg, it lasted months. In natural herds, dominant older males slap down rambunctious youngsters. After standing down to a larger bull, the testosterone rush in younger males stops. Sometimes in minutes. The fix was simple. Biologists introduced older elephants. The killing stopped. We evolved in multi-age tribal groups. Your teenager's brain is flooded with hormones designed for an environment where respected elders enforced social hierarchy and channeled aggression into adult roles. That environment is gone. Most teens now spend their formative hours in age-segregated classrooms with peers. The mismatch between evolved biology and modern isolation may be one reason adolescent mental health has collapsed. What adult in your teenager's life plays the role that an elder bull plays in an elephant herd?

It’s not a coincidence that the astronauts who’ve traveled further than any human don’t talk like they know everything. They talk like students and explorers. Their wonder and curiosity are on full display. That’s what science does to you. It dissolves your ego and forces you to confront the vastness of the unknown. It makes you more careful with your words, more open to being wrong and more in awe of the questions than obsessed with the answers. It softens you in the best way possible.

Sometimes I look at Kenyans and I honestly don’t understand us. 41-year-old Momentum Credit founder and CEO, Job Muriuki dies in a hospital in India… and instead of silence, respect, or even basic humanity… the internet turns into a celebration ground. Not whispers. Not mixed feelings. Straight up celebration.😱 You scroll the comments and it’s pain talking. Raw pain. Stories of people who took loans and ended up losing everything. Cars auctioned. Homes emptied. Lives flipped upside down. Men broken. Families strained. Some even saying they sank into depression because of it. So now the man dies… and instead of “rest in peace”… it’s “good riddance.” That’s where we are as a society??? 😳 And it forces you to ask uncomfortable questions: How bad must the experience have been for people to feel relief at someone’s death? What kind of system leaves this level of bitterness behind? And more importantly… what does it say about us that we respond like this? Because two things can be true at the same time. There could have been real suffering caused… and still, celebrating death feels deeply wrong. At some point, we stopped seeing each other as human. Now it’s just pain vs pain. No grace. No restraint. Just vengeance dressed up as “karma.” But if this is karma… then it’s not just visiting one man. It’s exposing all of us.

This road was completed in 2020. By 2022, potholes were forming. By 2023, residents were protesting over the potholes. In 2026, a new tender to rebuild it will be advertised. I've never seen these mobile weigh bridges and the overloaded road trains are owned by wakubwa.

@KeRRA_Ke has introduced multiple mobile weighbridges along he newly tarmacked Kajiado-Imaroro-Isara road to stop destruction following a public outcry due to use of the road by overloaded sand trucks.

This morning, I asked President Trump if he’s okay with the Iranians charging a toll for all ships that go through the Strait of Hormuz, he told me there may be a Joint US-Iran venture to charge tolls: “We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture. It’s a way of securing it — also securing it from lots of other people.” “It’s a beautiful thing”

@roomthinker @ray_omollo This gantry sign falls under @KeNHAKenya & should have been decommissioned prior to the junction's development. For @KeRRA_Ke to proceed with construction in its vicinity suggests a lack of inter-agency coordination and a lot of negligence and serious incompetence.
