Malta in the State of Palestine

3/3 We underline the importance of transparent, credible and inclusive elections and welcome this round of elections as an important step towards broader democratisation and strengthened local governance, in general terms and in line with the ongoing reform process.

2/3 Today, Palestinians have the chance to vote for their local councils and renew their democratic legitimacy. Per invitation of the Central Election Commission, several of our diplomatic missions and representatives will be present on the ground.

Malta joins international calls in expressing deep concern at the adoption of the Death Penalty Bill by the Israeli Parliament. We remain strongly opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances. Accountability and justice for all crimes, including heinous acts of terror, should be sought in full respect of human dignity and rights.

Deeply concerned by reports that Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and the Custos of the Holy Sepulchre were prevented by Israeli police from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Access to Christianity’s holiest site, especially for private Holy Week liturgy, must be respected. I urge Israeli authorities to reconsider and facilitate worship.

The delegation also visited Burqa village together with Premiere Urgence Internationale, where repeated settler attacks, land seizure, and movement restrictions continue to undermine residents’ livelihoods.

The EU Representative 🇪🇺 and EU Heads of Mission 🇧🇪 🇩🇰 🇫🇮🇫🇷 🇮🇹🇱🇹🇳🇱🇵🇱🇵🇹🇬🇷🇲🇹🇩🇪🇮🇪🇪🇸visited Sebastia, including its archaeological site, where Mayor Mohammad Azzem and Emek Shaveh briefed on recent land expropriations affecting the site and privately owned Palestinian land.

Malta supports the EU efforts towards Palestinian State building and welcomes the proactive EU engagement in the Peace Process at this critical juncture. In the margins of today’s EU-Palestine High Level Dialogue, I held talks with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, to reaffirm Malta’s longstanding support to the Two-State Solution and @MaltaGov’s ongoing efforts to support the Palestinian people; with humanitarian aid, medical assistance, scholarships and other initiatives. #Malta condemns the resumption of attacks on Gaza and calls for Israel to exercise restraint. We continue to underscore the importance of safeguarding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and urge Hamas to honour their commitments on the release of hostages, while stressing the need for all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian aid workers, while facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The attack on al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza is deplorable and against international humanitarian law. Expecting its evacuation within twenty minutes is impossible. It is unacceptable that children are paying the price with their lives. This is deplorable and unacceptable.

Rather than seeking to blame this or that party, we must work together to avoid a full-scale conflict in this region. 2. Steps to promote immediate de-escalation are of paramount importance. 3. The disregard of the #UNSC's repeated demands for a ceasefire is deeply worrying 4. Malta continues to condemn all acts of violence and aggression in the region. 5. We condemn the killing and abduction of more than 1,450 Israelis on 7 October and the killing of 33,200 Palestinians in the ensuing reprisal. 6. Denial of humanitarian assistance and use of starvation as a weapon of war are grave international law violations. 7. The safety of UN personnel, humanitarians and journalists must be guaranteed by all parties, and the international community must support all efforts in this direction. 8. We welcome ongoing efforts to revitalise the Palestinian Authority. 9. A just resolution of this conflict must embrace the Palestinians’ aspirations for UN membership and Statehood. 10. Such solution must also ensure the safety security of Israelis, without the threat of terrorism. 11. I am extremely concerned by the ongoing loss of life in Palestine including yesterday's killing of World Central Kitchen personnel. Humanitarian aid workers must be protected everywhere and at all times and we must continue to pursue an immediate ceasefire in the region.

I welcome the UNSC's adoption of today's ceasefire resolution on Gaza. Together with fellow Council Members, @MFETMalta @MaltaUNMission was honoured to play a role in both drafting and negotiating this vital resolution. We must now focus on its full implementation.

#UNSC just adopted Res 2712 tabled by Malta. It calls for urgent & extended humanitarian corridors in Gaza Strip + unconditional release of hostages, esp. children. Our efforts were guided by the need to have a humanitarian Res. We're determined to continue working towards peace.

Deadly cycles of violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory keep accelerating, as the peace process remains stalled. The outlines of the solution are laid out in @UN resolutions & international law. What is needed is political will to make the difficult choices for peace.
