SECOND FILTER – ADVERTISERS Herman & Chomsky in Manufacturing Consent point out that because advertising revenue is crucial to the profitability of most media outlets, advertisers have a powerful role in shaping not only what content media outlets publish, but even which ones exist at all. Attracting advertisers is a core business for media outlets. Advertisers want a particular type of audience, one that is well-off, and usually they do not want to advertise with an outlet that they perceive as having values hostile to their interests. A media outlet advocating for a wealth tax may not be attractive to most big advertisers. Sometimes an advertiser may directly seek to interfere with news coverage, but more often the pressure from advertisers, even if unstated, leads to self-censorship to avoid offending them. Over decades, media outlets made a great deal of money from the tobacco industry’s advertising and went along with the tobacco industry’s spreading of doubt about the dangers of their product. The same process is happening now with the fossil fuel companies. In 2015, the journalist Peter Oborne blew the whistle on media outlets changing their news output to please advertisers. He resigned in protest from the Daily Telegraph and accused the paper of suppressing or downplaying negative coverage of HSBC because HSBC was such an important advertiser. As Oborne was a very senior journalist at the Telegraph and widely respected, his resignation on this issue was very significant. Oborne was absolutely right when he said, “If major newspapers allow corporations to influence their content for fear of losing advertising revenue, democracy itself is in peril.”
